WTA World No. 3, Coco Gauff will face Madison Keys in the pre-quarterfinals.
American tennis star Coco Gauff has equalled Iga Swiatek’s record of most wins on clay court in WTA 1000 events before turning 21 following her victory over Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska at the ongoing Madrid Open 2024.
Current WTA No. 1 Iga Swiatek recorded a total of 13 wins in WTA 1000 events before turning 21. Nevertheless, with a 6-4, 6-1 win over 31st seed Dayana Yastremska, Coco Gauff has equalled the Pole’s record.
The 20-year-old is also only one win behind Caroline Wozniacki, who had 14 wins before she celebrated her 21st birthday. Gauff, who turned 20 in March, has more than 10 months remaining before her 21st birthday, and will be expected to not just match Wozniacki and make the record her own.
In her first game, Gauff defeated Dutch Arantxa Rus with a double bagel. Rus had defeated 17-year-old Brenda Fruhvirtova in the opening round to advance, while American Gauff had received a bye. In the round of 32, Gauff registered another comfortable win over Ukrainian Yastremska.
After the win, she was asked about her performance. Replying to the question, Gauff stated that she wanted to end the match on a more dominant note, especially the first set, which ended 6-4. She said:
“I’m happy with how I played. In the first set, I wish I could have closed it sooner, but I was happy with being able to buckle down. And in the second, everything was smooth sailing as well.”

Next up, she will face Madison Keys in the round of 16. Madison Keys, seeded 18th, defeated Liudmila Samsonova (R32) and Irina-Camelia Begu (R64) on her way to the pre-quarterfinals. Teaming up with compatriot Taylor Townsend, Gauff has also participated in the women’s doubles action.
On Sunday (April 28), Gauff and Townsend will face the United States’ Sofia Kenin and Bethanie Mattek-Sands in the round of 16. At the age of 20, Gauff is already a well-known star in the tennis world. She also won the 2023 US Open, defeating two-time Australian Open champion Aryna Sabalenka.
