Iga Swiatek defeated Aryna Sabalenka to win her maiden Madrid Open title.
WTA World No. 1 Iga Swiatek has become the first player to win seven consecutive WTA-level finals since she herself achieved the feat between 2020 and 2022.
Between the 2020 French Open and the 2022 US Open, she had won 10 consecutive WTA-level finals, a milestone not reached by any other player. Again, she’s looking forward to breaking her record. Since winning the 2023 Roland Garros, the Pole has won all of the WTA tournament finals that she has played in.
On Saturday, she played a three-set thriller against her arch-rival Aryna Sabalenka for the WTA 1000 Madrid Open title. The two tennis stars were playing a replay of last year’s final in the Spanish capital. However, this time, the Belarusian tennis star failed to defend her title as Iga Swiatek saved three championship points to win her maiden Madrid Open title.
With the win, the four-time Grand Slam champion leads 7-3 over Aryna Sabalenka in their head-to-head record. The Madrid Open was Swiatek’s third title of the season; she had won the Qatar Open and Indian Wells earlier.

Iga Swiatek, who won her ninth WTA 1000 title, has also tied the likes of Petra Kvitova and Simona Halep in the elite list. Only Serena Williams (13) and Victoria Azarenka (10) have won more WTA 1000 titles than the Pole since the format’s introduction in 2009.
In addition to that, she became the first tennis player born in the 2000s to win 20 titles. The only other players to be born in the 2000s and win more than 10 titles are Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, who both have won 13 ATP titles.
After the unforgettable victory, the WTA World No. 1 also took to social media and uploaded a few pictures from the match. She wrote, “What a match that was…no words needed. Proud and happy I’m heading to Rome. See you there!”
