World No. 13 Taylor Fritz made a strong start to the tournament. The American tennis star lost his first set in the quarterfinals, but prior to that, he won all his matches without dropping a single set.

In his opening match at the 2024 Madrid Open, he overcame Italy’s Luciano Darderi with scores of 7-6, 6-4. After defeating Sebastian Baez in the Round of 32, he went up against Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz. Despite Hurkacz being the favourite, Fritz managed to break his serve twice and secured the victory in straight sets. In his most recent match, he defeated Francisco Cerundolo to earn a place in the semifinals.

Meanwhile, Andrey Rublev, yet to claim a recognized title in 2024, ended a four-match losing streak by defeating Carlos Alcaraz, who had a 14-match winning streak in Madrid.

Rublev also won all his matches in straight sets leading up to the quarterfinals. He began with a victory over Facundo Bagnis, winning 6-1, 6-4. He then beat Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 7-6, 6-4 in the third round and continued his strong performance by defeating Dutch player Tallon Griekspoor 6-2, 6-4 in the Round of 16.

Taylor Fritz has been experiencing a golden patch on the clay courts this year. Before entering the Madrid Open, he had been to the final of the Bavarian International, where he eventually lost against Jan-Lennard Struff. 

The American tennis player has stamped a 19-8 (70.4%) win-loss record this year. With just one ATP 1000 title and two semi-final finishes to his name over his career, Fritz will surely look to make his second final at the Madrid Open.

Although Rublev has looked quite comfortable in his matches at the Madrid Open, in his previous two clay court tournaments, first at the Monte-Carlo Masters and then the Barcelona Open, he was eliminated in the initial rounds.

With a 19-9 (67.9%) win-loss record and 17.5% break percentage compared to Fritz’s 23.8%, Rublev looks a bit vulnerable compared to his opponent’s performance so far in the year.
