Swiatek’s second position in danger as Gauff trails by only 170 points after Madrid Open 2025.
Aryna Sabalenka completed a three-peat in Madrid, dropping just a solitary set on her path to glory. The Belarusian capped off her title run with a commanding victory over the in-form Coco Gauff in the final, rallying from a break down in the second set to seal the win in style. Courtesy the title win, she retains the World No #1 ranking, extending her lead over the field with a gap of more than 4,000 points.
Gauff would look back at the Madrid Open 2025 competition with hope, as the American regained her touch for the first time this season since the United Cup. Her strong forehand winners coupled with powerful serving paved the way for a spot in the finals, with victories over strong contenders including defending champion Iga Swiatek and seventh seed Mirra Andreeva.
Swiatek’s shocking loss in the semi-finals was a big talking point. The magnitude of the defeat was stunning as Gauff shocked the Pole 6-1, 6-1. Due to her excellent outing in Madrid, the American is back at the third position of the WTA rankings and could displace Swiatek for the second spot, should the Pole falter in Rome.
Swiatek, the reigning champion at both the Italian Open and Roland Garros, faces mounting pressure to defend crucial ranking points during the clay season. A slow start could cost the five-time Grand Slam winner her place in the top two and potentially see her drop even further in the rankings.

Jessica Pegula dropped out of the World No #3 spot following a Round of 32 exit in Madrid, while fellow top-10 players Madison Keys, Mirra Andreeva, and Qinwen Zheng managed to hold their ground.
One of the biggest upsets came with Elena Rybakina’s third-round loss to Elina Svitolina. After more than two years as one of the most formidable forces on the WTA Tour, the Kazakh star appears to be struggling, hampered by ongoing coaching controversies and signs of mental fatigue.
