Tennis fans online have reacted to the new design of the Matua Madrid Open’s trophy.

The ATP 1000 Madrid Open has redesigned its trophy, and the new accolade is currently getting mixed reactions from the world of tennis.

Apart from the four Grand Slams, the Madrid Open is one of the most important tournaments on the ATP calendar. The event was founded in 2002 as a hardcourt competition in place of the Eurocard Open, and during that time, the tournament used to take place at the Madrid Arena.

However, the ATP 1000 Masters event was relocated to La Caja Magica in 2009, and since then, the competition has been regularly taking place at the same venue on clay. In the same year, WTA events were also introduced in the Madrid Open.

Rafael Nadal has been the most successful men’s singles player in the tournament with five titles. On the other side, Czech tennis star Petra Kvitova has the most (3) titles in women’s singles events.

Apart from all the features and facilities of the event, the design of the Madrid Open’s trophy has always been debated.

Interestingly, the accolade design of the tournament has again managed to spark a debate among tennis enthusiasts. The Madrid Open has introduced a new black-coloured rock-shaped trophy for the upcoming edition. Some fans lauded the design by comparing it to former ones. Here are the reactions:

On the other side, some tennis fans outright claimed that the trophy’s design is bad and the tournament should rework it. Here are a few more reactions:

The competition has also signed a new multi-year partnership deal with the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund (PIF). Consequently, the deal is expected to play a crucial role in making the sport accessible to people all around the world. This year’s Matua Madrid Open is scheduled from April 22 to May 5. After the conclusion of the clay-court tournament, the Italian Open will start on May 8.

Moreover, after missing last year’s action, Rafael Nadal will also be making his return to the ATP 1000 event.
