(WATCH) Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova and other former tennis stars attend Met Gala 2024

Before retirement, Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova shared a heated rivalry on the tennis court.

Along with top Hollywood celebrities, former tennis stars such as Serena Williams, Venus Williams, Maria Sharapova, and more attended the Met Gala 2024 on May 6.

Hollywood celebrities and pop singers such as Zendaya, Lana Del Ray, Camila Cabello, Nicki Minaj, Elle Fanning, Cardi B, and more were present at the fashion event. However, the likes of former WTA tennis stars did a great job in stealing the limelight. Serena Williams, a 23-time singles Grand Slam winner, draped a golden dress for the Met Gala 2024.

While her sister, Venus Williams, wore a broken mirrored dress, which garnered acclaim from fans across the globe, she said about her dress, “It’s based off the theme of today, we’re showing all these dresses that are too fragile to wear.”

Apart from the Williams sisters, former Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova also attended the fashion event. Sharapova wore a green-coloured dress. Her designer, Prabal Gurung, later revealed that he found his inspiration for the dress in garden florals and nature.

He said (via Town & Country), “I wanted to blend the ideas of sleeping beauty and the garden of time, combining the delicateness and floral elements into a couture gown.”

Maria Sharapova also met Serena Williams and Venus Williams at the Met Gala, where they also talked. Sharapova and Williams were arch-rivals at the tennis court before retirement; however, their rivalry was majorly dominated by the American tennis star.

They faced each other for a total of 22 times between 2004 and 2019 on the WTA tour. Of all 22 matches, the former Russian tennis star won only two. Apart from the tennis court, the two reportedly also had personal indifference. Nevertheless, from their recent interactions, they seem to be on good terms now. Sharapova also shared a video of herself talking to Serena Williams at the Met Gala on her Instagram account. Here is the video:
