Russia’s Alexandrova has defeated top seed Iga Swiatek and fifth seeded Jessica Pegula.

Jessica Pegula has left the building, leaving Danielle Collins as the sole American in the main draw. Collins, playing in her final season, is making the most of it and is in the second Miami Open semi-final of her career.

Collins defeated Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 in 80 minutes. The unseeded Collins and one-time World No. 7 has won three of five matches against seeded players over the last week. She enjoys a 4-0 undefeated head-to-head against Garcia. Collins broke Garcia’s serve three times and never faced a break during their quarterfinal match.

Apart from dropping a set in the first round to compatriot Bernarda Pera, Collins has maintained a clean run to reach the last four at Miami. The American had a good day on the court, winning 90% (26/29) first serve points and sending down 22 winners to Garcia’s 12.

On the cusp of reaching her maiden WTA 1000 final, she will have to get past 14 seed Ekaterina Alexandrova in Thursday’s semifinals. Alexandrova dashed the hopes of Jessica Pegula in Wednesday’s night session, winning 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the quarter-final just two days after ousting World No. 1 Iga Swiatek in the fourth round. It was a disappointing loss for the Pole, who won the title in 2022 and was looking for a second Sunshine Double.

Ekaterina Alexandrova vs Danielle Collins preview

Should Danielle Collins be able to punch above her weight and bag the Miami Open trophy this year, she will be the first American woman to have claimed the title since Sloane Stephens in 2018. Collins could also be the first unseeded winner in the tournament’s history. She is the only unseeded player among the four semifinalists.

The 30-year-old American will look to do one better than her semifinal appearance in 2018 and make the event her swansong in her last year on tour.

Collins’ semi-final opponent, Ekaterina Alexandrova, will seek to prevent that. She, too, is in pursuit of her first win in Florida. Alexandrova has been the surprise package at the event – taking out three seeds, all ranked above her back-to-back. The Russian will also look to cross a milestone by becoming the first woman from her country to win the Miami Open.

The two semifinal contenders at the 2024 edition of the Miami Open have never crossed paths. They now meet towards the end of their careers in one of the biggest stages in the sport. At stake is a final debut for both women.

Where and how to watch the live streaming and TV broadcast of Ekaterina Alexandrova vs Danielle Collins, Miami Open 2024 semi-final match in India?

Indian viewers can witness the semifinal encounter between Ekaterina Alexandrova and Danielle Collins via Tennis TV or WTA TV.  Being premium streaming services, the viewer can expect uninterrupted coverage, highlights, and replays of previous matches on demand.

Their match will be the second semi-final of the day after Elena Rybakina and Victoria Azarenka complete their round-of-four game.

Prediction

With three wins against top five players, Ekaterina Alexandrova will be brimming with confidence against Danielle Collins. The Russian and the American will look to come out swinging, and the player to take an early lead will find themselves at an advantage. Alexandrova will be eyeing the significant rankings boost accompanying an appearance in the final.

The last American standing won’t have it easy against the World No. 16. Alexandrova defeated Elena Rybakina in Adelaide, knocked in Iga Swiatek in straight sets and prevented an all-American semi-final by ending Florida resident Jessica Pegula’s journey in the tournament.

The numbers favour Alexandrova as both players countdown to the game. In 2024, the Russian has won 67.3% of service games, while Collins has mustered 65%. Collins enjoys the lead in breakpoints converted at 53.1% to Alexandrova’s distant 41.1%.

Both players have sent down a similar number of double faults this season – 81 by Alexandrova to 73 by Collins. Putting a leash on those double faults will be crucial to a favourable outcome.

Known for her aggressive gameplay, Collins hits powerful groundstrokes on either flank with a strong forehand and an effective cross-court backhand. In contrast, Alexandrova wears her opponents down by playing the waiting game with her long rallies and excellent placement. The Russian spent 40 minutes longer on court than Collins did for her quarterfinal match.

Result: Ekaterina Alexandrova to win in three sets.
