Sumit Nagal fell short in the final round of qualifying on his debut in the event.
India’s Sumit Nagal failed to reach the main draw of Miami Open 2024 after losing to Coleman Wong of Hong Kong in the second and final round of the qualifying stage. Sumit Nagal squandered the advantage from securing the first set and crashed to a three-set defeat in the second round of qualifying at the Miami Open 2024.
Nagal found himself undone by Wong’s 16 aces and lost the match 6-3, 1-6, 5-7. The Indian could only muster one ace in reply. Wong managed to break Nagal’s serve three times, while Nagal broke back only once. The Indian’s inability to make most of the breakpoint opportunities (1/5) was a factor in his defeat.
Nagal let go of an opportunity to force a tiebreak in the third set at 40-30. Had he managed to break Wong’s serve, the outcome could have been different. The most crucial of the breakpoints came in the 11th game of the third set, and Wong wrapped up the third set 7-5, saving a breakpoint in the twelfth game.
Looking past his five double faults, Wong outplayed Nagal in every other major department. While the Hong Kong resident made 27 unforced errors to Nagal’s 10, Wong sent down nearly four times as many winners. Nagal’s 12 winners paled in comparison to 48 winners by Wong.

Disappointingly for Nagal, Coleman Wong chose to even out the head-to-head with Nagal at a major event. Wong and Nagal are now 1-1 in their head-to-head record.
Nagal had defeated Gabriel Diallo 7-6(3), 6-2 in the previous round but fell at the final qualifying hurdle for the second time this month. At Indian Wells, he made the main draw as a lucky loser.
The 19-year-old, who hails from Hong Kong, was given a wild card into qualifying. He won back-to-back three-setters to make his ATP Masters 1000 debut. Wong will now face Serbian Laslo Djere in the opening round.
