Brazilian Joao Fonseca overcame Ugo Humbert in straight sets in the second round.
Brazilian Joao Fonseca showed just why he is one of the brighter prospects on the ATP Tour with a clinical display against Ugo Humbert in Miami Open 2025. Fonseca accounted for the American teenager and 19-year-old Learner Tien – 6-7(1), 6-3, 6-4, in the opening round to set up the clash with Humbert.
The fast-improving Brazilian pulled off a 6-4, 6-3 win against Humbert in just 72 minutes to become the youngest man since Carlos Alcaraz to make the third round at an ATP 1000 event.
Alcaraz accomplished the milestone at the Paris Masters in 2021 as an 18-year-old. Fonseca, at 18 years and seven months, pulled off the achievement on a day filled with upsets. The big names to have exited in the second round of the Miami Open include Carlos Alcaraz, Jack Draper, Holger Rune and American Ben Shelton.

Second seed Alcaraz tumbled out in a shock second-round defeat to Belgian David Goffin. Draper and Rune, who concluded the 2025 Indian Wells Open fortnight as winner and runner-up, lost to Jakub Mensik and Reilly Opelka respectively. Andrey Rublev was the other major casualty in the second round, losing to another Belgian, Zizou Bergs.
The Brazilian’s achievements this season include a maiden tour-level title at the ATP 250 event in Buenos Aires in February and a Challenger event in Phoenix in March. Fonseca reached a career-high ranking of World No. #60 on completion of his Indian Wells title run. The Rio native also defeated Andrey Rublev at the Australian Open in January for his first career top-ten win.

The 18-year-old Fonseca has been rewarded with a third-round meeting against No. #10 seed Alex de Minaur for his efforts. Fonseca and De Minaur will face off for the first time on tour. Fonseca could find himself across the net from third-seed Taylor Fritz in the quarter-finals if he makes it that far. Should he pass the Fritz test, the unseeded Brazilian could end up facing top seed Alexander Zverev in the last four.
A possibility of a deep run at the 2025 Miami Open has opened up for Fonseca, given the exit of several potential contenders for the title and his recent form.
