The 20-year-old will face Caroline Garcia for a place in the quarterfinals.
Coco Gauff has made her way to the fourth round of the Miami Open 2024 after coming from a break down as she handed lucky loser Oceane Dodin a straight set 6-4, 6-0 defeat in their first career meeting.
The US Open champion’s winning streak now extends to 22 in her last 23 matches on home turf. Her only loss since her title run in Washington last July came to Maria Sakkari in last week’s Indian Wells semifinals.
Gauff win-loss record on home soil, including her Washington title run, is a revelation – Washington DC (4-0), Cincinnati (5-0), US Open (7-0), Indian Wells (4-1), Miami Open (2-0).
She looks all set to make her first quarter-final appearance in Miami when she plays No.23 seed Caroline Garcia in the round of 16. The Frenchwoman bested Naomi Osaka in straight sets 7-6(4), 7-5 to end the Japanese player’s run and book a fourth-round clash with the American. Gauff and Garcia are even in their head-to-head meetings at 2-2. Their last duel took place at the 2022 WTA Finals in Fort Worth, Texas, which Garcia won.
Gauff gave no leeway to the Dodin, ending up with a tally of 21 winners, to seven unforced errors. Dodin sent down way too many double faults (9) – this and her 26 unforced errors for only 11 winners made by her cost her the match. One of those double faults came in the eighth game of the first set with Dodin on triple game point and a chance to go up 5-3. That slip proved costly for the Frenchwoman.
Until then, it looked like Dodin had the match in her pocket, and Gauff would be another seeded casualty. The Frenchwoman quickly took charge to go up 4-2 with a break in the first set. Gauff broke back and went on a 10-game winning spree that took her from down a break to victory in just 64 minutes against the unseeded qualifier.
