Novak Djokovic has become the oldest man to reach semi-finals at an ATP Masters 1000 event.
If it’s Novak Djokovic on the court, tennis fans know the match can turn into a magic show anytime. In a moment that left spectators in awe, the Serbian legend pulled off a seemingly impossible point that became the turning moment of his quarter-final match at the ongoing Shanghai Masters 2025.
The Serbian superstar emerged victorious against Zizou Bergs of Belgium despite battling an ankle injury amid Shanghai’s brutal heat. He sealed the first set 6-3 and faced a tense second set with the score tied at 5-5 and 30-30.
During that crucial juncture, Bergs unleashed five consecutive overhead smash opportunities, each seemingly unreturnable. But Djokovic’s incredible anticipation and footwork allowed him to retrieve every shot. He finally won the rally when Bergs hit a forehand crosscourt long.
The commentators hailed it as the “point of the tournament.” The epic rally gave Djokovic a break point, which he converted, eventually serving out the match to win 6-3, 7-5.
The Sky Sports commentator Jonathan Overend said, “Oh no, no, no, no, no, no. Five, five overheads in a row or high balls that Zizou plays and he just cannot break down Djokovic. Who can?!”
“I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a point like it. Bergs really struggling with the overheads and Djokovic, well he’s so experienced and just knew to keep putting the ball up there, high into the Shaghai night and ultimately Bergs, he just couldn’t keep it going any longer. Very hard to recover from losing that point,” the co-commentator Colin Fleming added.
This win marks Djokovic’s 10th semi-final appearance at the Shanghai Masters in 11 participations so far at the tournament he holds the record for most titles lifting four trophies before.
At 38 years and 133 days, he is now the oldest player to reach the semi-finals of an ATP Masters 1000, surpassing his previous record set at the Miami Open earlier this year.
When the Serbian defeated Yannick Hanfmann in the round of 16, he became the oldest player to reach the quarter-finals of an ATP Masters 1000 event.
Djokovic is chasing a record-extending fifth Shanghai Masters title and a record-extending 41st ATP Masters 1000, as he prepares to face Valentin Vacherot in the semi-finals.
