Djokovic is aiming to lift a record fifth title in Shanghai.

Novak Djokovic kept his pursuit of a record fifth Shanghai Masters title alive when he kept an inspired Yannick Hanfmann at bay to post a 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 victory in two hours 42 minutes.

Djokovic was kept on his toes by Hanfmann as the German qualifier broke away early in the opening set to take a 2-1 lead on Djokovic’s serve. The World No. 150 took the opening set on his second match point against the 38-year-old Djokovic.

Seeded fourth, Djokovic fought back to take the second set on a humid day in Shanghai, breaking the German’s serve in the 12th game to sidestep a tiebreaker. Hanfmann recorded 33 winners and 13 aces, but a rejuvenated Djokovic had found his rhythm.

The Serb raced to a 4-1 lead early in the decider, breaking Hanfmann’s serve in the fourth game and taking the third set to close out his longest three-setter in 2025.

Djokovic sets up a fourth-round meeting with Spain’s Jaume Munar after taking a 2-0 lead over Hanfmann in their head-to-head.

Munar closed out the opening set, 6-4, but after dropping serve thrice in the second, he let his rival, Yoshihito Nishioka, back into the match. The left-handed Japanese qualifier broke Munar’s serve thrice to even the contest.

However, Munar was not to be denied a place in the fourth round, racing through the third set in just 32 minutes to advance. Munar kicked things up a notch, scoring 11 winners in the decider to just three by Nishioka.

The 28-year-old Spaniard finds himself in the fourth round for the first time at the venue. Munar last played Djokovic in 2018 at Roland Garros, where he lost in straight sets in their second-round clash.

Preview

Djokovic avoided the fate that befell No. 5 seed Taylor Fritz in the third round of the Shanghai Masters. Fritz was bundled out by Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5—a disappointing result for the 2024 semi-finalist. Fritz and Perricard battled humid conditions on Sunday that also claimed the top seed, Jannik Sinner, a day later.

Sinner, who turned up to play after the Djokovic–Hanfmann fixture, retired with severe cramping in his right thigh in the decider. The score was 6-7(3), 7-5, 3-2, with Tallon Griekspoor ahead 3-2 in the third set.

Munar returns to the ATP top 40 in the live rankings, rising two spots to No. 39, as he secured his best result in Shanghai and at a Masters event.

The Spaniard made the fourth round in Madrid in 2023 before losing to Daniel Altmaier. Munar made the last four at the ATP 500 event in Dallas for his best result in the ongoing season.

Match Prediction

A vintage Djokovic was on display against Yannick Hanffman as he came back from a set down to embrace victory in Shanghai. It was the 52nd career match win for the Serb after losing the opening set.

As the first and only match between Djokovic and Munar took place seven years ago in Paris, it will carry little weight in their upcoming face-off. The Serb will have to recover quickly from his tight three-setter against Hanfmann, with the humidity causing the four-time champion to throw up in the second set.

Buoyed by the crowd after he clinched the second set, the Serb scripted a comeback to take the win in three sets.

Djokovic will be the central figure on Tuesday against Munar, and with his ability to mix things up on the fly will likely test the Spaniard’s patience and resolve.

Munar may steal a set if the Serb’s concentration drifts, but Djokovic’s experience should carry him safely into the quarter-finals.

Result: Novak Djokovic to win in three sets.
