Djokovic recorded his 80th career win in at the Arthur Ashe Stadium on Monday.

Novak Djokovic laboured to a 6-1, 7-6(3), 6-2 win over American teen Learner Tien in the first round of the US Open 2025 on Sunday night. It was the Serbian’s first taste of competitive tennis in over six weeks.

Djokovic, who sat out of the warm-up events ahead of the US Open, took the opening set in just 24 minutes. Tien, who made his Top 50 debut earlier this month, forced a second-set tiebreak.

The American teenager went toe-to-toe with the Serb before surrendering a closely fought second set in 1 hour and 20 minutes. Djokovic dominated the proceedings in the third set, winning it in 39 minutes. It took 2 hours and 25 minutes for the Serbian legend to down a fighting Learner Tien.

Victory over Tien fetched Djokovic his 80th match win on the iconic Arthur Ashe Stadium. By unlocking his latest milestone, the four-time US Open champion is the first man to achieve the feat at the world’s largest tennis stadium.

Svajda’s serve did not let him down, as he recorded 14 aces and converted nine breakpoints en route to his first main draw win over Piros.

Preview

Hampered by foot blisters, Djokovic got the job done after spending nearly two and a half hours on court to claim his 75th consecutive opening round win at Grand Slams. It has been slim pickings for the Serb this season. His only title came at the Geneva Open against Hubert Hurkacz. Djokovic last delivered a Grand Slam title back in 2023 at the US Open.

Over the US Open fortnight, Novak is making his 80th Grand Slam singles main draw appearance. He is the third player in the Open Era to make 80+ appearances at majors, with Feliciano Lopez and Roger Federer, at 81 appearances each, being the other two.

After winning the Olympic Gold last year, he has set his sights firmly on winning a record 25th Grand Slam. Djokovic made deep runs at all three majors this year, only to exit in the semi-final stage.

His unseeded American rival won two Challenger titles last month but has yet to make it past the second round at a major. Svajda’s best result at a Grand Slam is a round of 64 appearance at the 2021 US Open.

Match prediction

Djokovic will step onto the court to take on Svajda with a mountain of Grand Slam experience, backed by his composed demeanour. The Serbian knows how to pace himself and overcome his physical limitations. The Serb would have shaken off the rust in his first match and is near certain to outmaneuver and grind the young American from the baseline.

Svajda breezed through qualifying without dropping a set and made it through his opening round match against Zsombor Piros in a similar fashion. Savjda’s exploits on the Challenger tour notwithstanding, the American will find he is short of the required firepower to counter Novak Djokovic.

Djokovic and Savjda are to face at a venue where the Serb’s many accomplishments make him a formidable foe.

Result: Novak Djokovic to win in straight sets.
