Djokovic faces Bergs in a maiden tour-level clash in Shanghai.

Novak Djokovic, aiming for a record-extending fifth title at the Shanghai Masters 2025, will face 26-year-old Belgian Zizou Bergs in the quarterfinals on October 9, Thursday.

The Serbian endured a challenging day, battling past Jaume Munar in a hard-fought fourth-round encounter to book his spot in the last eight.

Unlike in the previous round against Yannick Hanfmann, where the Serb dropped the opening set, Djokovic began on a strong note on another warm day in Shanghai to take the first set.

Djokovic advanced after a 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 win over Munar in two hours and 41 minutes. The World No.5 remains on track for a 41st ATP Masters 1000 title and is the highest-ranked player left in the men’s singles draw following Jannik Sinner’s retirement in the third round.

Munar recovered to take the match into a decider after wearing down the four-time champion in a lengthy 75-minute second set.

Following a medical time, the Serb broke Munar’s serve to take an early lead in the decider and once more in the seventh game to take a 5-2 lead and sealed the win on his serve in the next game.

Djokovic marched into the Shanghai Masters quarter-finals for the 11th time, sealing victory when the Spaniard’s backhand drifted long on the second match point.

The 38-year-old will now play Belgium’s Zizou Bergs, who is in the midst of a career-best run at any ATP 1000 events. Bergs booked passage into the last eight after he took down towering a 6’8” Canadian Gabriel Diallo in three sets.

The 26-year-old Bergs fought back from an opening set deficit and evened the score after claiming the hour-long second set. The decider included a nail-biting tie-break as Bergs pulled off an escape act, fending off two match points en route to his two-hour, 49-minute win and reaching his first Masters 1000 quarter-final.

Preview

Djokovic (38 years, 133 days) became the oldest man on the ATP Tour to reach an ATP 1000 quarter-finals when he sidelined Jaume Munar in their fourth-round face-off.

The Serb has an easier path to the final after Sinner’s retirement has emptied the men’s draw of his biggest challenger to the title.

Zizou Bergs will leave Shanghai with a career-high ranking of No. 38, irrespective of the result in the quarter-finals. The Belgian’s cliff-hanger with Diallo was preceded by straight set wins over Casper Ruud and Francisco Cerundolo.

Bergs’ victory over Diallo also served as payback for his loss to the Canadian in the finals at ‘s-Hertogenbosch.

The humidity in Shanghai upset Djokovic’s rhythm after he collapsed on court midway through his fourth-round match.

World No. 11 Holger Rune emphasised the need for a heat rule after his fourth-round victory over Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. The Dane overcame Perricard, 6-4, 6-7(7), 6-3 and is seeded to clash with Djokovic in the semi-finals.

Match Prediction

The Shanghai Masters has provided more than its fair share of surprises in the 2025 edition.

Bergs will aim to extend his deep run in Shanghai when he meets Djokovic for the first time in the quarter-finals of the ATP 1000 event. Bergs is an unexpected presence in the last eight, having never made it past the third round at a Masters event before.

Djokovic will arrive for his quarter-final match after playing back-to-back three-setters. The Serb relied on a late surge to turn the tables on his rivals.

Bergs held it together against Diallo in his round of 16 match. The Belgian will need to muster that composure once again on Thursday when he faces Djokovic.

The Serbian legend, being a seasoned campaigner, will grind down Bergs and will seal his spot in the semi-finals. Bergs’ shortage of wins against top-10 players will also work against him, and the enormity of the situation could get the better of the Belgian.

Result: Novak Djokovic to win in straight sets.
