Four players have won the Miami Open title after turning 30.

Following the surprise-filled Indian Wells Open in March 2025, the shocking results continued at the Miami Open, with several seeded players such as Elena Rybakina and Emma Navarro bowing out in the second round. Mirra Andreeva was expected to get closer to achieving the Sunshine Double but her dreams were cut short by Amanda Anisimova in the third round.

The tournament once again highlighted the importance of fitness in addition to skill to succeed in the scorching Florida heat. The top-seeded Aryna Sabalenka lifted expectations as she made it to the finals. Living in Miami has helped him adapt to the conditions and perform at his best.

The Belarusian loves playing on hard courts as all three of her Grand Slams have been on those hard surfaces. She will have a great challenge from an American Jessica Pegula. The 31-year-old would expect her fellow American crowd to back her against the top-seeded as she aims to become only the fifth woman to win the Miami Open after turning 30.

The stat proves how physically demanding it is to play in the Miami Open. On that note let’s look at the five oldest players to have won the Miami Open in the Women’s Singles.

5. Martina Navratilova – 28 Years and 5 Years

Martina Navratilova’s name will go down in the Miami Open history books as the Czech-American legend won the inaugural edition of the Miami Open. Back in 1985, it was named the Lipton International Players Championships and Martina was seeded No.1 for the tournament. She lived up to the top billing as she lost only one set during the tournament.

The final was expected to be a close contest, as second seed Chris Evert-Lloyd was competing for her first title. But the then-28-year-old eased past Chris to lift the title. It was historic since Martina also won the Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles event the same year, becoming the first player in the women’s category to win a triple crown in 12 years.

4. Danielle Collins – 30 Years and 3 Months

The latest name on this list is Danielle Collins, who won the 2024 Miami Open defeating Elena Rybakina in the final. The final was a story to be told. On one side was Elena Rybakina, seeking her first title in her second consecutive Miami Open final, while on the other side was unseeded Danielle Collins, looking to emulate Kim Clijsters’ feat.

The legendary Belgian won a tournament as an unseeded player and Collins was looking to join the list. It was a closely contest first set with Collins edging out Rybakina 7-5. The World No. 53 carried on the momentum to become the lowest-ranked women’s singles champion in the tournament’s history and the oldest maiden WTA 1000 winner in seven years.

3. Chris Evert-Llyod – 31 Years and 4 Months

While Chris Evert-Llyod missed out on winning the maiden title in Miami, she came out strongly the next year to lift the title. In 1986, the Miami Masters was part of the Virginia Slims World Championship Series which had 52 events running over a year. Going into the tournament, the American was top-seeded after Martina Navratilova opted out due to the flu.

For the second year in a row, the final was between the top seeds, and this time Chris was on the right side of the result beating Steffi Graff 6-4, 6-2. Although Chris Evert-Llyod won 157 titles, she could lift the trophy at Miami only once as the legendary American lost three consecutive finals after winning the title in 1986.

2. Petra Kvitova – 33 Years and 1 Month

Petra Kvitova is one of the fan favourites during her hay days. Standing tall at 6 feet, the left-hander with her pin-point services would trouble most players on the court. Her powerful down-the-line winners were as effective and one of the primary weapons when she won her Grand Slam titles. It took her many years to win her maiden Miami Open.

She suffered a WTA 1000 title drought for five years and a win in Miami in 2023 could help her break that streak. She not only stopped her title drought but also stopped Elena Rybakina from completing the Sunshine Double as she had won the Indian Wells Open. Kvitova became the first Czech player to lift the trophy in Miami. It was her only title at Miami as she has taken a maternity break and is looking to make a comeback.

1. Serena Williams – 33 Years and 7 Months

One could hardly find a record without the name of Serena Williams in the Women’s Tennis circuit. The American has had 25 years of dominance, including a record-breaking eight titles at the Miami Open. It wasn’t easy for the former World No. 1 as she lost her first-ever Miami Open finals to her sister Venus Williams. But Serena made a strong comeback to complete a hat-trick of titles from 2002 to 2004.

Suffering from injury and depression, Serena was pushed down in the rankings to No.7 in the next few years. The Champion made a wonderful comeback in 2007 and 2008 winning the Miami Open beating Justine Henin and Jelena Jankovic in the finals respectively. Her second hattrick was stopped by Victoria Azarenka in 2009. Serena kept getting better like a fine wine as she won a hat-trick of titles after turning 30 and finished her trophy cabinet with eight titles from Miami.
