Paris Olympics 2024, Tennis Day 4 Highlights: Rafael Nadal-Carlos Alcaraz advance to 3rd round
Alexander Zverev aims to defend his gold medal at the Paris Olympics 2024.
The tennis matches scheduled for Tuesday at the Paris Olympics have plenty of excitement in store for fans of the sport. Alexander Zverev, Stan Wawrinka and Lorenzo Musetti are among the well-known names scheduled to play.
Among them, Stan Wawrinka (doubles) and Alexander Zverev (singles) have gold medals at the showpiece event to their name. Musetti, meanwhile, made the last four at the 2024 Wimbledon edition.
Let’s take a look at the matches to watch out for at the Paris Olympics 2024 on July 30, Tuesday:
5. Jack Draper vs Taylor Fritz
British No. 1 Jack Draper and American No. 1 Taylor Fritz will face-off in their second round match. The two Olympic debutants are tied at 1-1 in their head-to-head. Draper moved past Japanese veteran Kei Nishikori in the first round with a straight sets win of 6-1, 6-4. Meanwhile, Fritz got past Alexander Bublik, winning 6-4, 6-4. Taylor Fritz has an edge over Jack Draper for the upcoming match, having defeated the British player at the BMW Open in Munich this season.
4. Jakub Mensik vs Tommy Paul
Jakub Mensik and Tommy Paul will begin their rivalry at the Paris Games in their second round match. While Mensik is in his first Olympics, Tommy Paul made his debut in Tokyo in 2020, but failed to get past the opening round on that occasion. Paul’s Russian rival, Aslan Karatsev, ended the American’s stay in Tokyo with a straight sets win, 6-3, 6-2.
Fast forward to Paris 2024 and Italian Luciano Darderi posed no problems for Tommy Paul, with the latter posting a 6-3, 6-4 win to earn a place in the second round. Jakub Mensik, for his part, was equally effective against Kazakh player Alexander Shevchenko with a 6-3, 6-4 win.
3. Lorenzo Musetti vs Mariano Navone
Lorenzo Musetti lost to Australian John Millman in the first round at the Tokyo Games. This time around, he sent packing the 37-year-old Frenchman Gael Monfils, 6-1, 6-4, to setup a second round meeting with Mariano Navone of Argentina.
Musetti and Navone are headed for their first career match on Tuesday. Navone overcame Portuguese Nuno Borges, dropping only four games for a 6-2, 6-2 win in his first Olympics.
2. Stan Wawrinka vs Alexei Popyrin
Swiss veteran Stan Wawrinka faces Alexei Popyrin for the first time this year and second overall. Wawrinka, who won the doubles gold at Beijing 2008, lost to Popyrin last season at Umag in the finals, 6-7 (5), 6-3 6-4. Wawrinka will look to avoid a similar result after his comprehensive 6-1, 6-1 win over Pavel Kotov.
Popyrin had to dig deeper against Nicolas Jarry to avoid being bundled out in his first Olympics. The Australian needed to wade through a second-set tiebreak before taking the win 6-3, 7-6 (8) in 90 minutes.
1. Alexander Zverev vs Tomas Machac
Alexander Zverev will be on a quest to retain his gold medal from the 2020 Tokyo Games and become the second man since Andy Murray to successfully win back-to-back golds in Olympic history. The German got off to a good start in Paris with a comfortable 6-2, 6-2 win against Spain’s Jaume Munar.
Zverev faces off against fellow Tokyo Olympian Tomas Machac for a first career head-to-head. Machac overcame Zhang Zhizhen, taking three sets 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 to move into the second round in 95 minutes.
