Tennis players to cross 10,000 points milestone in WTA rankings ft. Ashleigh Barty, Iga Swiatek & more
Serena Williams was the first player to earn more than 12,000 points in the WTA rankings.
The WTA Tour has seen multiple players dominating the courts over the years. But, only few players have managed to break the 10,000 points mark in the WTA rankings. Ever since the inception of the WTA in 1973, the tour has taken positive strides in terms of equality and influence of the players.
The same applies to the WTA rankings system which has undergone multiple changes over the years. Thus, the list won’t include the names of Steffi Graf, Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova and more. Only seven female tennis stars so far have crossed the 10,000-point mark in the rankings. Thus, without further ado, let’s take a look at the list:
7. Ashleigh Barty: 10,185 points
Ashleigh Barty crossed the 10,000-point mark on August 23, 2021, shortly after she won the Wimbledon Championships.
She was the champion at the Miami Open, Cincinnati Open, Stuttgart Open and the Yarra Valley Classic at that time. Barty announced her retirement from professional tennis in March 2022 after she won the Australian Open.
6. Caroline Wozniacki: 10,255 points
Danish veteran Caroline Wozniacki became the WTA World No. 1 in October 2010. However, she crossed the 10,000-point mark after seven months of reaching the pinnacle. In 2010, she reached the semi-finals at Flushing Meadows and in 2011, she lost to China’s Li Na in the last four.
She won titles at the Dubai Championships, Indian Wells Open, Charlestone Open and Brussels Open. However, Wozniacki’s only Grand Slam title came in 2018, when she took down Simona Halep in the summit clash at the Australian Open.
5. Dinara Safina: 10,521 points
Dinara Safina would have been an even bigger name in the tennis world if her career was not affected by injuries. The former Russian tennis star played three singles Grand Slam finals, ending as a runner-up on all occasions.
In 2009, she ended as a runner-up at the Australian Open and Roland-Garros. Additionally, Safina won the Madrid Open and the Rome Masters, before reaching the semi-finals at Wimbledon. The winning streak helped her breach the 10000-point mark in July 2009.
4. Maria Sharapova: 10,690 points
Maria Sharapova reached her highest points tally on May 13, 2013. However, during the time, the former Russian tennis star was World No. 2. Sharapova won the Indian Wells Masters and Stuttgart Open. Additionally, she ended as a runner-up at the Miami Open and Madrid Open.
She was the defending champion at the 2013 Roland-Garros. Maria Sharapova failed to safeguard her title in Paris, as she came up short against Serena Williams.
3. Victoria Azarenka: 10,955 points
In October 2012, Victoria Azarenka broke the 10000-point deadlock to join Maria Sharapova, Dinara Safina, Caroline Wozniacki and Serena Williams in the exclusive list at that time.
She excelled at the Australian Open, Sydney International, Qatar Open, Indian Wells Masters and China Open to reach the pinnacle.

In November 2022, she breached the 11,000-point mark and became only the second tennis player to do so. She won the French Open, WTA Finals and China Open in 2023. Moreover, in May 2024, she was the champion of the Madrid Open, Rome Masters, Qatar Open and the Indian Wells Masters.
1. Serena Williams: 13,615
The most decorated and successful female single tennis player of the Open Era, Serena Williams, owns numerous records. Similarly, she’s the only tennis player to accumulate more than 13,000 points in the WTA rankings. She reached the pinnacle of 13,615 points on June 10, 2013.
Williams won the Wimbledon Championships, the US Open, the WTA Finals, the Canadian Open and the China Open in 2012. Later, she claimed trophies at the Miami Open, Madrid Open, Italian Open, Brisbane International and Charleston Open in 2013, before defeating Sharapova in the French Open final.
