Top five players with most titles in men's singles at Halle Open

Roger Federer won the most titles in men’s singles at the Halle Open.

The Halle Open has long been a prestigious stop on the ATP Tour, serving as a vital grass-court tournament before Wimbledon. Since its inception, it has witnessed some of the greatest players in tennis history showcase their skills on the fast grass courts of Halle, Germany.

Arguably the greatest ever to have played on grass, Roger Federer bossed this tournament, amassing a total of 10 titles. He is the only player in the event’s history to have won more than five titles, thereby establishing himself as the King of Halle. Let’s take a look at the top five players with the most titles in men’s singles at the Halle Open.

5. Jannik Sinner- 1

Jannik Sinner won his maiden ATP title on grass in Halle 2024. The Italian began his campaign with a victory from a set down against Tallon Griekspoor. He recorded narrow wins over Marozsan and Struff before facing Hubert Hurkacz in the final.

It was a close contest, but the top seed won both tiebreaks to prevent the 2022 Halle winner from winning his second title. Sinner’s hopes of defending his crown were squashed in 2025 by Alexander Bublik, who rallied from a set down to hand over the World No. 1 his first loss against a non-top-20 player after 673 days.

4. Borna Coric – 1

Borna Coric’s lone Halle title in 2018 was one of the tournament’s most memorable stories. He stunned Roger Federer in the final, ending the Swiss legend’s 20-match winning streak at the event.

The Croatian saved match points in a dramatic contest, demonstrating nerves of steel and remarkable composure under pressure. This victory was his first ATP title on grass and remains a career highlight, as he defied Federer on his favorite surface.

3. Tommy Haas – 2

Tommy Haas lifted the Halle trophy twice, first in 2009 by defeating Novak Djokovic and again in 2012 with a stunning upset over Roger Federer. In 2009, Haas was unseeded and toppled the World No. 4 Djokovic in straight sets, a major surprise.

His 2012 victory was even more remarkable, as he was ranked outside the top 80 and became the oldest Halle champion at the time by overcoming Federer. The German-American had to outlast two of the best grass players the game has seen, highlighting the magnitude of his achievement.

2. Yevgeny Kafelnikov – 3

Yevgeny Kafelnikov was the first player to claim multiple Halle Open crowns, winning in 1997 against Petr Korda, in 1998 over Magnus Larsson, and in 2002 versus Nicolas Kiefer.

Kafelnikov’s three titles spanned six years, showing remarkable consistency and skill on grass during an era dominated by serve-and-volley specialists. His 2002 victory was particularly poignant, as it marked the last ATP singles title of his career.

1. Roger Federer – 10

Roger Federer’s reign at the Halle Open is unmatched, with a staggering 10 titles spanning from 2003 to 2019. He defeated Nicolas Kiefer (2003), Mardy Fish (2004), Marat Safin (2005), Tomáš Berdych (2006), Philipp Kohlschreiber (2008), Mikhail Youzhny (2013), Alejandro Falla (2014), Andreas Seppi (2015), Alexander Zverev (2017), and David Goffin (2019) in the finals.

Remarkably, the Swiss icon won four consecutive titles from 2003 to 2006, establishing Halle as his grass-court stronghold and laying the foundation for his dominance at Wimbledon. His 2019 win at age 37 made him the oldest champion in tournament history, highlighting his extraordinary longevity.

Federer is also the only player to win the event in three different decades, and is by far the greatest player to have graced the courts of Halle.
