Serena Williams was the first player to breach 13k points in the WTA Rankings.

The sport of tennis has seen multiple icons over time. When the Open Era started, the game was dominated by Billie Jean King, Margaret Court and Evonne Goolagong Cawley. Their place was later taken by Steffi Graf, Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova. Monica Seles was one of the biggest prospects in tennis and her career became one of the biggest what-ifs.

At the start of the 21st century, Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova and Venus Williams took the guard. Meanwhile, the circuit then went under the dominance of Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka. Thus, with that being said, let’s take a look at the tennis players with the most points achieved in the WTA rankings:

5. Dinara Safina: 10,521 points

Former Russian tennis star Dinara Safina is one of the three players in history to become World No. 1 without winning a singles Grand Slam title. The other two are Jelena Jankovic and Karolina Pliskova. She was runner-up twice at the Australian Open and once at Roland-Garros.

In July 2009, she garnered her best total of 10,521 points after she won the Madrid Open and the Rome Masters and reached the final of the Australian Open and French Open. She also made it to the semi-finals at the All England Lawn Tennis Club.

4. Maria Sharapova: 10,690 points

Former World and Russian No. 1 Maria Sharapova became a famous name in tennis after she won the 2004 Wimbledon Championships by stunning Serena Williams in the summit clash. She won five singles Grand Slams in her professional career and two of them came at Stade Roland Garros (2012 and 2014).

Sharapova crossed the 10,000-point mark in 2012. However, she reached her best total of 10,690 points in 2013, before she lost in the French Open final against Williams. She won the Indian Wells Masters and Stuttgart Open in 2013 and ended as a runner-up at the Miami Open and Madrid Open.

3. Victoria Azarenka: 10,955 points

Belarusian tennis star Victoria Azarenka accumulated a total of 10,955 points in the rankings in October 2012. At the time, she won the Australian Open, Sydney International, Qatar Open, Indian Wells Open and China Open, while finishing runner-up at the US Open and the WTA Finals (2012).

The former World No. 1 reached the first spot for the first time in January 2012 and she held the top ranking for a combined total of 51 weeks. Azarenka won two Australian Open titles, consecutively in 2012 and 2013. She also ended up as the runner-up at the US Open on three occasions (2012, 2013 and 2020).

2. Iga Swiatek: 11,695 points

Polish legend Iga Swiatek tasted success early in her career and had already spent 121 weeks as the WTA World No. 1 at 23 years of age. Only nine players before her had spent more than 100 weeks in the top spot. Interestingly, she crossed the 11,000-point mark in 2024.

In the first half of 2024, she won the Qatar Open, Indian Wells Masters, Madrid Open, and Rome Masters before defending her title at Stade Roland Garros. With a stellar campaign, she accumulated a total of 11,695 ranking points on 20 May 2024.

1. Serena Williams: 13,615 points

Serena Williams’s prowess on the tennis court was unparalleled by any other star during her prime. She won 23 singles, 14 doubles and two mixed doubles Grand Slam titles. Additionally, she also has four gold medals at the Olympics. She’s the only female tennis player to cross the 13,000-point mark in the rankings.

In 2012, she won the Wimbledon Championships, the US Open, the WTA Finals, the Canadian Open and the Shanghai Masters. In 2013, she won the Miami Open, Madrid Open, Italian Open, Brisbane International, Charleston Open and also dethroned Maria Sharapova at the French Open. On June 10, 2013, Serena Williams reached her best point total of 13,615 points.
