WTA 1000 are second coveted title in women’s tennis after Grand Slams.

Aside from the Grand Slams, the WTA 1000 titles are on the second rung of the ladder and are much coveted. From its history as a ‘Tier One’ tournament to its current avatar since 2009, the WTA 1000 format has seen many great names lift the trophy.

Here we shall take a Sneak peek into the record books and get to know more about the players with the most WTA 1000 titles won ever since the current format was adopted in 2009.

Most WTA 1000 titles won since format’s introduction in 2009

5. Simona Halep (9)

Romania’s Simona Halep has nine WTA 1000 trophies against her name. She was ranked in the top five between 2014 and 2020 and won two Grand Slams and eight of her nine WTA 1000 titles in that period.

Halep’s ninth and last 1000 title was the National Bank Open in 2022 before she became embroiled in the doping controversy. Having been cleared by the Court of Arbitration for Sport in March this year, she was given a wildcard for the Madrid Open 2024.

However, the former World No. 1 did not turn up for the tournament, citing health reasons and not being sufficiently fit to play a high-level tournament such as the Madrid Open.

4. Petra Kvitova (9)

Petra Kvitova has nine titles in this format, with three of them coming in Madrid — the most by any player in the WTA. Kvitova’s three titles in Madrid came in 2011, 2015, and 2018. Kvitova and her 180 wins in the WTA 1000 format place her fourth on the list of players with the most matches won.

Kvitova’s ninth WTA 1000 came at Miami last season, but she could not follow it up with a 10th WTA 1000 title. She exited the follow-up event, the Madrid Open, in the second round.

3. Iga Swiatek (10)

Iga Swiatek claimed her maiden Madrid Open WTA 1000 trophy, also her ninth at this level, in a marathon 2 hours and 49 minutes final over two-time champion Aryna Sabalenka.

Her greatest success in the WTA 1000 format was at Doha, where she won three titles (2022-2024), followed by Rome (2021, 2022). The Pole also boasts of reaching 11 finals in 29 (37.9%) main draw appearances, just ahead of Serena Williams.

During her title run in Madrid, Swiatek also equaled Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova (29) for taking the fewest possible matches to earn herself 25 WTA 1000 wins on clay.

2. Victoria Azarenka (10)

Victoria Azarenka leads the list of active players for WTA 1000 titles. The Belarusian has lifted 10 WTA 1000 trophies since making her main draw debut in 2005. Six of her trophies in this format came in singles, while the rest were in doubles.

Azarenka reached a personal milestone at the recently concluded Madrid Open when she notched up her 200th WTA 1000 level victory with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Tatjana Maria in the second round.

1. Serena Williams (13)

Among the 73 WTA titles won by Serena Williams are 13 WTA 1000 titles. Her haul of WTA 1000 titles is a record that stands eight years after she won her last title in this format in Rome in 2016. Williams reached 18 out of 49 (36.7%) of the WTA 1000 finals relative to her main draw appearances.

The success story of the younger Williams does not end there. In a career spanning 18 seasons, she won 23 Grand Slam singles titles—an Open Era record. She was also one of the youngest to lift the trophy at Flushing Meadows. Serena was only 17 when she won the US Open in 1999, making her only the second African-American woman to win a Grand Slam title, after Althea Gibson.
