Aryna Sabalenka vs Elena Rybakina, US Open Final

Current World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka will face off against the soon-to-be World No. 1 Elena Rybakina

It has been one of the best Grand Slams in recent years, with all the top stars in the women’s section producing their best tennis till the very end. After the top four players qualified for the semi-finals, it is only fitting that the first- and second-seeded players fight for the ultimate prize, as Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina face off in the US Open 2026 finale.

Defending champion Sabalenka of Belarus will bid for a US Open three-peat after delivering her best performance since Miami. The Belarusian played a flawless match to beat USA’s Jessica Pegula for the third consecutive time at the US Open. After a modest outing against Czech Republic’s Linda Noskova, Sabalenka’s semi-final heroics will give her confidence ahead of the title clash.

This is Sabalenka’s second Grand Slam final of the 2026 calendar year, as she hopes to end the Slam season with a Major title. If she succeeds, she would be the first player to complete the three-peat since Serena Williams did it in 2014. However, the top seed will find her task cut out as she faces Russia’s Elena Rybakina at the other end of the court.

The Kazakh was pushed hard in her semi-final by an improved Coco Gauff of the USA, who had the backing of the roughly 20,000 fans inside Arthur Ashe Stadium. Despite losing the opening set and getting broken while serving for the match, Rybakina held her nerve when it mattered to seal the win over the American.

Rybakina will be featuring in her maiden US Open final and has a chance to claim her third Grand Slam title. The soon-to-be World No. 1 was far from her best against Gauff, but coming through despite the setbacks will give her plenty of motivation heading into the final. She also ended Gauff’s flawless record at the US Open, as the American had never lost a match in New York after winning the first set.

Preview

This will be the fourth meeting between Sabalenka and Rybakina this year, with all of their previous battles taking place earlier this season. Rybakina avenged her 2023 Australian Open loss with a nerve-wracking win in Melbourne to win her second Slam, but Sabalenka settled scores in Indian Wells by winning the title.

The pair also met in Miami, where Sabalenka sealed a convincing straight-sets victory. Rybakina also secured the World No. 1 ranking after her quarter-final over Qinwen Zheng, ending Aryna Sabalenka’s 99-week reign at the top of the charts.

With both players in top form and plenty at stake, this is shaping up to be a blockbuster — neither will want to leave New York without the title.

Match prediction

The past couple of weeks at the US Open have shown why the WTA is currently well ahead of the ATP in depth, competition and quality — and fittingly, it’s the world’s best going head-to-head for the title.

Both women have clear strengths. For Rybakina, it’s her first serve. Against Gauff, the Kazakh’s otherwise solid backhand erred on multiple occasions, something she will look to work on during her day off on Friday. Meanwhile, Sabalenka will have to find a way to counter Rybakina’s serve, do well on her own serve and nail her returns as she did against Pegula.

Based on their semi-final outings, Sabalenka seemed the more consistent player throughout. However, counting Rybakina out will be a perilous mistake, given her gritty comebacks and composure under pressure. It will eventually come down to who is stronger mentally, given the gravity of the situation.

Rybakina’s calmness under pressure, which came to the fore against Gauff in the presence of a hostile crowd, could prove pivotal in big moments against Sabalenka. The Belarusian has to counter the jinx of a potential three-peat and her own poor record in Grand Slam finals.

This one is likely to come down to fine margins — a strong start could be crucial in tilting the final either way.

Result: Aryna Sabalenka to win in three sets.
