Aryna Sabalenka survived a massive scare against Linda Noskova
Defending champion Aryna Sabalenka of Spain battled past Czech Republicâs Linda Noskova 7-6(1), 3-6, 7-6(7) in a dramatic quarter-final that lasted two hours and 22 minutes. The top seed appeared in control after an initial break in the opening set, but Noskova responded with a strong comeback to take the second set and then surged 4-2 ahead in the decider.
The Belarusian was visibly frustrated, but managed to stay composed, broke back courtesy of a modest serving game from the Czech, and ultimately prevailed in the final-set 10-point tiebreak, after Noskova had twice threatened to take control.
Noskova actually finished with 46 winners to Sabalenkaâs 42 and saved seven of nine break points, while Sabalenka hit 12 aces to Noskovaâs 18. The World No. 1 will have to raise her level to reach another US Open final â she must first get past Jessica Pegula of the USA in the semis.
Pegula had to come from a set down against Emma Navarro in an all-American quarter-final. Navarro made the stronger start, breaking Pegula twice in the opening set as the third seed struggled to find her rhythm on serve.
Pegula gradually settled into the match and levelled the contest by taking the second set 6-4, before Navarro again moved ahead early in the decider with a break, 2-1.
Pegula responded emphatically, winning four consecutive games to take control of the third set and close out the victory. It wasnât Pegulaâs best performance, but sheâll be relieved to have reached a third straight US Open semi-final.
