Preview: Elena Rybakina vs Diana Shnaider semi-final prediction, betting tips & odds, head-to-head | Ningbo Open 2026

Elena Rybakina is two wins away from defending her Ningbo Open crown

World No. 1 Elena Rybakina arrives in the Ningbo Open 2026 semi-finals with her chances of retaining the title still very much alive. She faces 2023 runners-up and last season’s semi-finalists Diana Shnaider for a place in the final.

Rybakina, the reigning Australian and US Open champion, was stunned in the second round in Beijing at the start of the month and pulled out of the Wuhan Open citing a foot injury, so her return in Ningbo was a test of her fitness.

After a first-round bye, she was leading 5-0 when qualifier Polina Kudermetova retired. The quarter-final against Katarzyna Kawa was a sterner test. Rybakina won the first set 6-1 in 22 minutes and looked in total control, but Kawa broke her serve three times in a back-and-forth second set to level at a set apiece.

The Kazakh converted only two of nine break points in the second set, but regrouped quickly to comfortably clinch the match in the final set.

Sixth seed Diana Shnaider is currently ranked #13 in the world, and reached her fourth semi-final this year, after Adelaide, Roland Garros and Washington.

The Russian registered two consecutive impressive victories in Ningbo, beating Alex Eala 7-5, 6-4, and then outlasting Iva Jovic in 2 hours 11 minutes. Shnaider will be looking to reach her first final since winning the Monterrey Open in 2025.

Preview

Rybakina leads the head-to-head 2-0 against Shnaider, and has won all four sets she has played against the Russian, including a 6-4, 6-4 win in the Cincinnati round of 16 earlier this year. On paper that is a strong record, but Cincinnati was a closer contest, and Shnaider’s level has risen since then.

The three-time Grand Slam champion’s game rests on a big serve and first-strike power, and when it clicks she is almost unplayable, having proved this at the recently concluded US Open.

She hit eight aces against Kawa in her Ningbo quarter-finals, but her serve also left her exposed in the second set, and she is still shaking off a layoff and a foot injury.

For Shnaider, the match comes down to returning well and using her left-handed angles. Her serve swings out wide, and when at her best, she plays with a unique variety of stroke-making, which was instrumental in her hard-fought win over Aryna Sabalenka at this year’s Roland Garros. Shnaider is also the more match-ready of the two, having won two tough three-setters this week.

Prediction

Rybakina is still not at full capacity, and the foot injury that forced her out of Wuhan means she may not be moving freely in long rallies.

Her serve was broken three times in one set against a qualifier ranked 128th, and Shnaider is a much better returner who will make the most of every second serve.

The left-hander’s kick serve to Rybakina’s backhand can force short balls, and her flatter forehand down the line can cut off Rybakina’s angles.

The top seed’s power should win her at least one set, but Shnaider’s consistency and recent form give her the edge in a mouth-watering battle.

Result: Diana Shnaider to win in three sets.
