Djokovic remains undefeated in first-round matches at Roland Garros.

Novak Djokovic claimed his opening round win at Roland Garros 2026 in four sets against Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. He defeated the towering Frenchman 5-7, 7-5, 6-1, 6-4 for his maiden win against the home favourite.

The Serb’s quest for a 25th Grand Slam trophy kicked off with the two-hour, 51-minute victory in his 82nd Grand Slam appearance. The 6’7” Frenchman’s 16 aces went in vain as he failed to match his second-round appearance from 2025.

It was a solid opening round performance from the 39-year-old Djokovic to set up a second round face-off against another Frenchman, Valentin Royer.

Royer recorded his first-ever match win on home soil with a 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 win over Bolivian qualifier Hugo Dellien. The two-hour victory sets up the 24-year-old with the biggest match of his career.

Royer has never been past the second round of any Grand Slam as he looks to break new ground at a Grand Slam event in Wednesday’s face-off against Djokovic.

Preview

Djokovic’s match win on Monday places him two wins away from his Australian Open tally of 104. The Serb now has a 102-17 record in the French capital.

Landing in the bottom half of the draw hands the Serb an advantage as it has few obstacles to a potential semi-final appearance. In the last four stage, Jiri Lehecka and Alexander Zverev are likely rivals for the 24-time Grand Slam champ.

While the Serb’s 2026 season has been far from memorable, Djokovic still managed to outperform Mpetshi Perricard despite losing the opening set. The former World No. 1 bounced back with a resilient display of tennis to hold of the Frenchman.

Valentin Royer, who is also French, eased into the second round with a straight-set win, the victory coming against unseeded Belgian Hugo Dellien. Pulling off a similar result against a player of Djokovic’s calibre is likely to be beyond the reach of the journeyman.

Royer will face three-time French Open champion Djokovic for a chance to progress to the third round for the first time. Djokovic, the No. 4 seed in Paris, is unlikely to be challenged in the tournament’s early stages.

The underdog status of his rival, Royer, further boosts Djokovic’s chances of securing passage to Round 3 of the clay court major. The Serb will look to return to his winning ways and pick up his fourth Roland Garros trophy.

For Royer to survive the biggest match of his career, he will have to pull out something extra special against the Serb.
