Djokovic and Sinner to face off in a semifinal rematch on Friday.

Catch Every Update, Anytime, Anywhere

Novak Djokovic held his ground even as Felix Auger-Aliassime made the No. 7 seed toil for his win. The Serb is now in the Wimbledon semifinals for a record 15th time. The Serb battled it out for five hours, 5 minutes for a 7-6(10), 3-6, 6-3, 6-7(4), 7-6(4) victory. It was the longest quarterfinal in Wimbledon history.

The former World No. 1 sealed the win minutes before the 11 p.m. curfew under a closed centre court roof. The 39-year-old Djokovic has reached the last four for eight consecutive Wimbledon appearances, a streak going back to 2017.

With the No. 7 seed now two wins away from his eighth Wimbledon title, he will face top seed Jannik Sinner in a rematch from last year. Djokovic is the second oldest man after Ken Rosewall to reach the semifinals at the grass court major.

Sinner brought up another straight-set victory against Jan-Lennard Struff, a 7-5, 7-6(4), 6-3 scoreline in two hours and 34 minutes. The World No. 1 is yet to drop a set since a five-set first-round battle with Miomir Kecmanovic.

The 24-year-old Italian was tested by the 36-year-old Struff, who is ranked No. 74 in the world. Sinner held his ground in the face of the German veteran’s tenacity to book a spot for a third semifinal at The All England Club. Sinner is now in his 10th major semifinal and moves to 25-4 at SW19.

Preview

Sinner will face seven-time champion Novak Djokovic in a last-four clash on Friday. It will be their first meeting since the Italian lost to the Serb at the Australian Open semifinals earlier this year.

It will be their 12th meeting on tour and their third straight meeting in the semifinals at a Grand Slam. Sinner, the defending champion, and Djokovic, the seven-time winner, will be facing off in a match worthy of a final.

The Serb snapped a five-match losing streak to Sinner at Melbourne in January, where the Italian was looking to defend his title. Six months later, their paths are set to cross again with a spot in the championship round at stake.

Djokovic holds a 2-1 advantage on grass over Sinner ahead of the semifinal meeting on Friday.

Match Prediction

Sinner denied Djokovic a chance to play for his eighth Wimbledon title, winning their last four encounter in straight sets last season. Jannik Sinner went on to dethrone defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in the title round and become the first Italian to win Wimbledon.

A year on, their paths cross again with the Serb gunning for his eighth Wimbledon title and to end his Grand Slam drought, while the Italian will be looking to hold on to his crown and, with it, cement his place as No. 1 ahead of Carlos Alcaraz’s return to the tour.

Having won five of their six previous meetings, the momentum is very much in Jannik Sinner’s favour. It will be an absorbing contest, with the Italian advancing to the final for the second year in a row.

Result: Sinner to win in five sets.
