Fonseca triumphs in Switzerland, Fritz and Shelton suffer early exits.
João Fonseca continued his remarkable rise at Basel Open 2025, capturing his second career tour-level title and his first ATP 500 crown.
At just 19, the Brazilian defeated Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6-3, 6-4 in the final, becoming the youngest champion in the tournament since Jim Courier in 1989 and the first Brazilian to win above ATP 250 level since Gustavo Kuerten in 2001.
Fonseca’s Basel triumph also marks his second title at this event, following his previous success at the Next Gen ATP Finals in Jeddah, and reinforces his rapid ascent in the ATP rankings, moving him to a career-high No. 28.
The tournament marked some shocking upsets earlier, with top two seeds in Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton, both losing their second rounds. There were plenty of withdrawals as well, with Casper Ruud and Felix Auger Aliassime forfeiting their respective quarter-final clashes midway.
