Rybakina successfully defended a title for the first time in her career
Elena Rybakina thrashed Leylah Fernandez in the final, in straight sets to retain her Ningbo Open 2026 title. The win took just an hour and 16 minutes, and it was Rybakina’s first title as the World No. 1. The first set turned dramatically after Fernandez led 2-1.
The Kazakh won five consecutive games from 1-2 down to take the opener, and the second set followed the same pattern. This is Rybakina’s 15th career title and fourth of 2026, after the Australian Open, Stuttgart and the US Open. It is also the first time she has successfully defended a WTA Tour singles title.
The title capped a week that began with doubts about her fitness. Rybakina had lost the opening round in Beijing and missed Wuhan Open due to a foot injury. Her overall performance in Ningbo should give her lots of motivation and confidence as she looks to repeat her heroics from last year at the WTA Finals, set to be held in Indian Wells this year.
Fernandez, who triumphed in Singapore nearly a month ago, started the week ranked 30th and rises to No. 23 after her run to the final.
