Indian veteran Bopanna faces a stern challenge in the opening round.

At Wimbledon 2024, Rohan Bopanna was seeded second, when he played alongside Matt Ebden. Things have changed since, as he is now no longer ranked inside the top-40, and is not even India’s No. #1 doubles player anymore. Ever since the partnership with the Aussie came to an abrupt end, things have gone southwards for the Bangalorean.

Heading into the 2025 Wimbledon Championships, as unseeded, the path to glory for Bopanna and his current partner, Sander Gillé will be a tricky one. They enter the tournament on the back of appearances at Queen’s and Boss Open, making the quarter-finals in both ATP-500 events.

Match details

Preview

The India-Belgium pairing will have to produce a massive upset early in the tournament, if they wish to extend their run at Wimbledon 2025 beyond the first round. A tough first round has been handed, as they come up against the in-form swashbuckling German duo of Tim Pütz and Kevin Krawietz.

The pair triumphed just a week ago at Halle Open, defeating the second seeds in the final. They have been in excellent form all year, and have been one of the most consistent doubles teams on the ATP circuit. Their partnership has been longstanding, since 2023, when they made the semi-finals at Wimbledon, and quarters in 2024.

The same cannot be said about Bopanna, who has been looking for partners and kept chopping and changing since his split with Ebden. His latest partner Gille, joined him only after Roland Garros, and the duo have been together for just two compeititions, clearly unpromising signs ahead of the marquee event.

Match prediction

There is a lot different between these two teams. While their ranking stands out, the chemistry of the German duo and the experience they have, to tackle every possible situation together is expected to not just help them in the opening round, but also keep them in a good position for the rest of the tournament.

The Indo-Belgium pairing are still in their early phase together, and their previous two defeats have been disappointing. Bopanna has not reached the semis of any tournament so far, while Gillé enjoyed some success at the start of the season, reaching the finals at Open 13 and Rotterdam, but not making the semi-finals since.

Additionally, the Belgian has already lost twice to this German duo in 2025, albeit with a different partner, at the Munich Open and Madrid Open. For Bopanna, what could be his final Wimbledon appearance looks set to be a tough challenge, and an early exit looms large for the veteran.

Result: Tim Pütz/Kevin Krawietz to win in three sets.
