The Washington Open brings together the men and women in a combined ATP/WTA 500 event in the American capital. Alex de Minaur and Jessica Pegula will headline the event as the North American hard-court swing kicks off.
De Minaur defeated Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in last year’s final and will return to defend his title soon after tying the knot with fellow pro Katie Boulter.
The Australian will find himself competing with American hopefuls Ben Shelton and Taylor Fritz. Shelton and Fritz lead an American roster that includes Learner Tien and Frances Tiafoe on their home turf. The ATP 500 men’s draw also features Tommy Paul and talented Spaniard Rafael Jodar.
De Minaur will open against Stefanos Tsitsipas, while the No. 2 seed, Shelton, awaits a lucky loser or a qualifier for his opening round match. Fritz will take on Zizou Bergs, while Jodar will cross paths with Arthur Fils to begin their Washington Open journey.
In the women’s draw, it is 2019 champion Jessica Pegula who features as the top seed. Elina Svitolina, Naomi Osaka, and Diana Shnaider round out the top four and have all received opening-round byes.
Reigning champion Leylah Fernandez, Anna Kalinskaya, Madison Keys, and Emma Navarro complete the list of seeded players in the women’s draw. Jessica Pegula vs Madison Keys and Elina Svitolina vs Naomi Osaka are the potential semi-final matches.
Alexandra Eala will make her Washington debut against the more experienced Qinwen Zheng. Emma Navarro will face Sofia Kenin in an all-American first-round in the draw’s bottom half. Fernandez finds herself in the bottom half of the draw and will open her title defence against Magda Linette.
