In the women’s draw, defending champion Iga Swiatek is on a possible collision course with Serena Williams. Swiatek and Williams are slated to clash in a blockbuster third-round tie at this year’s Wimbledon. Serena will play her first Grand Slam since the 2022 US Open as a wildcard, and will face World No.53 Maya Joint in the opening round on Tuesday.
The return of the younger Williams to the WTA Tour follows months of speculation. The 23-time Grand Slam champion paired with Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko at Queen’s Club for the doubles event. Serena has been given a wildcard for the doubles draw at SW19, where she will be paired up with her sister, Venus Williams.
The storylines in the women’s draw converge with intruiging storylines within the first week. With Swiatek beginning her title defence on Tuesday against Taylor Townsend, any third-round showdown between the two stars would be on 4 July – American Independence Day.
Former finalist Jasmine Paolini lurks as a potential fourth-round opponent for Swiatek. The Pole could face the in-form Marta Kostyuk or the No.8 seed Elina Svitolina in the quarterfinals.
World No. 1 Sabalenka is seeded to take on Mirra Andreeva in the last eight. The other potentially intriguing quarterfinal match-ups include an all-American affair between Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff and Elena Rybakina against Amanda Anisimova.
