Top five shocking results from Wimbledon 2025 second round

World No. 4 Draper and Paolini were the biggest upsets from the second round of Wimbledon 2025.
The sequence of upsets continued in the second round of Wimbledon 2025, with only a handful of top-ranked players alive in the Championship. Only four of the top-10 ranked WTA players qualified for the third round, while five from the top-10 ATP rankings continue to keep their hopes alive.
It has been one of the most unexpected and strange slams in recent memory, with the lack of preparedness of top players coming to the fore. Moreover, the unusual weather in London this year, with temperatures soaring well above the seasonal average, has added to players’ struggles, contributing to a surge in upsets.
Here we take a look at the top five results that shook the tennis fraternity after round two.
Britain’s top-ranked Jack Draper lost to Marin Čilić
Outside the top two ranked players, and barring Novak Djokovic, many considered Jack Draper to have a huge say at Wimbledon this year, given his familiarity with the conditions and the backing of the home crowd.
However, as Andy Murray has said many times before, playing at home has its advantages, but it also brings added pressure to perform well.
The fourth-ranked Draper failed to handle the weight of expectations and eventually succumbed to Marin Čilić in a shocking four-set defeat. The Croatian, aged 36, is a former finalist at SW19, but is well past his prime and has played challenger events to prepare for Wimbledon.
Draper’s early exit is a major blow to local fans who were expecting to turn out in large numbers to watch him play in the final rounds.
World No. 22 Donna Vekić lost to Cristina Bucșa
2024 semi-finalist and one of the best hitters of the tennis ball, Donna Vekić marked her exit in the second round. Her defeat resulted in a massive dip in rankings, as the Croatian lost 710 points, and dropped from #22 to #51. Bucșa, who beat Vekic, was outside the top-90 rankings at the start of the competition, yet managed to emerge victorious rather comfortably.
World No. 12 Tommy Paul lost to Sebastian Ofner

Another ATP star, Tommy Paul, bowed out of the Championship. A quarter-finalist last year, the American did not have a great start to the grass season in his only pre-event at Eastbourne, where he lost in the opening round.
After starting his campaign in Wimbledon with a straight sets win, Paul won the first set against Ofner, before losing the next three. Despite inferior serving stats, Sebastian Ofner’s 100% success rate on break-point conversion played a vital role in his triumph.
World No. 4 Jasmine Paolini lost to Kamilla Rakhimova

The WTA suffered another blow with a result that favoured an unseeded player. After beginning on shaky grounds, Jasmine Paolini won her first round in three sets against Anastasija Sevastova. In contrast to the first round, where the Italian dropped the first set, she started well against Kamilla Rakhimova.
However, the Russian came storming back, with the perfect mix of aggression and superb first serves, with a 76% success rate. The Italian was a finalist here in 2024 and lost over 1200 points due to her poor returns. She is currently ranked #8 and could potentially drop out of the top 10 WTA rankings.
World No. 12 Frances Tiafoe lost to Cameron Norrie
Wimbledon 2025 has been good for the Brits, and Cameron Norrie benefited greatly from the local crowd, drawing huge crowds and inspiring the former top-10 player to perform beyond his potential.
Frances Tiafoe began well, claiming the opening set. However, Norrie served his way through the next three sets to get the job done in four. The American lost significant ground after his second-round defeat.
