Only three Indian players have been ranked higher than Sumit Nagal on the ATP tour.

The ATP tour this season has seen many players achieving their best on the court. One of the players who has been acing his job has been Sumit Nagal. His latest accomplishment on the court is making an entry into the top 70 of the ATP rankings in the latest update released on Monday.

Nagal is currently ranked No #68 on the ATP tour. Only Vijay Amritraj – No #18 in 1980, Ramesh Krishnan – No #23 in 1985 and Somdev Devvarman – No# 62 in 2011 have been ranked higher than Nagal.

In 2015, he was ranked No #23 in juniors and is now heading in the right direction on the ATP tour. Nagal had started the 2024 season while being ranked No #138. He can now target an entry into the top #50 of the rankings.

The 26-year-old had made his grand slam debut during the 2019 US Open against Roger Federer. He even took the first set against the Swiss maestro which was a sign of what was to come.

Nagal has always been in form when his opponents are ranked higher than him. He manages to create a ruckus in the crowd with swift movements around the court. His ability to hit the right shots with such charisma under pressure has brought him more fame.

Nagal has now played in the main draw of all the four grand slams. He made his Wimbledon debut in 2024 and lost in four sets against Miomir Kecmanovic. Nagal will look to make a mark at the Paris Olympics 2024.

This will be his second outing at the Olympics. At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Nagal beat Uzbekistan’s Denis Istomin in the opening round. He then lost to Daniil Medvedev in the next match.

The Tokyo Olympics was held in hardcourts and it will be on the red dirt at Paris. Nagal will be sliding through the courts as his fans expect him to perform like a true champion.

Nagal is the only second Indian men’s player to compete in singles at consecutive Olympics. Leander Paes had played in three consecutive Olympics from 1992 to 2000. Nagal will be carrying India’s hopes on the clay courts at Roland Garros Stadium in Paris.
