Sumit Nagal misses qualification cut for US Open 2025 due to drop in ranking

The Indian No. 1 singles player finds himself outside the top 300 of the ATP rankings.
In July 2024, Sumit Nagal reached a career-best ranking of #68, and Indian tennis seemed to be well and truly back. However, things have only gone from bad to worse for Nagal since then, as he seems to have lost his way.
From earning direct main draw qualifications to key tournaments including the US Open 2024 and the Australian Open 2025, India’s No. 1 singles player now finds himself outside the top 300 rankings.
It has been a dramatic fall for the 27-year-old, who quickly went from a promising talent destined to bring glory to his motherland to now staring at a career marked by ifs and buts. Nagal’s poor returns and below-par rankings have resulted in him missing out on the US Open qualifications.
Players ranked from 75 to 225 cut the qualifiers, with seven additional players entering on protected rankings. Sumit Nagal is currently ranked 302 and missed the cut-off by some margin. Nagal has a total of 169 points, as opposed to ranked #225 Justin Engel with 247.
Sumit Nagal’s previous Grand Slam appearances

The Indian lost the very first qualifying round of Wimbledon 2025 to Giulio Zeppieri in three sets. He bowed out of the French Open 2025 in the second qualifying round, with Jurij Rodionov emerging victorious in straight sets.
Despite receiving a main-draw entry at the Australian Open at the start of the season, he went down to 26th seed Tomas Machac. Nearly a year back at the US Open, he was left with no answers against Tallon Griekspoor in the opening round.
Nagal’s recent outings
Nagal continues to play his tournaments on clay only and mainly features in Challenger events. Despite competing against lower-ranked opponents, placed well outside the top 200, the Indian continues to struggle.
His most recent loss came in Hagen, a Challenger tournament, where he lost to 17-year-old Niels McDonald, who has yet to make his debut on the ATP Tour.
