Sumit Nagal has become the first Indian to since 2019 to qualify for Roland Garros main draw.

For Sumit Nagal, this incredible journey of 2024 has felt almost surreal, like a dream he could have never imagined coming true, from his Australian Open heroics to his recent French Open qualification, the 25-year-old has been rewriting the record books with each passing week.

It was at Melbourne Park where Nagal first served notice of his intentions, becoming the first Indian male since 1989 to defeat a seeded player at a Grand Slam when he stunned Alexander Bublik in straight sets.

Merely weeks later, Nagal claimed his biggest title to date at the Chennai Challenger. He followed that up with a semi-final appearance at Bengaluru Open.

However, it was at the Monte Carlo Masters that Nagal truly arrived on the global stage. The Jhajjhar-born became the first Indian to win a men’s singles main draw match at the hallowed event, producing a spirited comeback to oust Italy’s Matteo Arnaldi.

Nagal also was able to take a set-off world No. 7 Holger Rune in a tightly-contested second-round battle, bowing out with his reputation significantly enhanced.

The crowning achievement, however, came just days ago as Nagal punched his ticket to Roland Garros, qualifying for the French Open main draw to become the first Indian male since Prajnesh Gunneswaran in 2019 to feature at the Parisian major.

Nagal, 25, would look to create many records along the way as he participates, However, Nagal has withdrawn from Munich, Barcelona and Bucharest open before the build up to French Open 2024.
