Fritz and Mensik to square off in a battle between two first-time Miami Open semi-finalists.

Taylor Fritz has earned himself the much-coveted semi-final spot in Miami for the first time across eight main draw appearances. The No. 1 American player quelled Matteo Berrettini, 7-5, 6-7(7), 7-5, after spending two hours and 44 minutes on court. The fifth consecutive win over Berrettini was not easy and Fritz spent the longest time on the court at the Miami Open 2025. None of his other matches had crossed the 2-hour mark.

Unlike their 2023 meeting in New York, where Fritz won in straight sets at the 2024 US Open, the American needed seven match points and three gruelling sets to get the better of Matteo Berrettini in the Miami Open quarter-finals. Taylor Fritz squandered two match points on the Italian’s serve at 6-5 in the second set and a further three match points when he was ahead 6-3 in the second set tie-break.

The No. 3 seed took the last three games in the decider to become the first American semi-finalist since John Isner in 2019. After the last eight nail-biter, Fritz will make his semi-final debut at the event against Czech teen Mensik.

The 19-year-old Jakub Mensik secured his maiden win against Frenchman Arthur Fils, 7-6(5), 6-1. In his first main draw appearance and semi-final debut in Miami, Mensik will hope for a memorable outing when he takes on Fritz. The No. 1 American player on Tour came out on top in their last meeting at the 2023 US Open. Mensik recently broke into the ATP Top 50 at No. 45 in February and has vastly improved since his last meeting with Fritz.

Mensik, who will play his first ATP 1000 semi-final at the Hard Rock Stadium, made a strong start to the year with consecutive last four appearances at Brisbane and Auckland.

Preview

Taylor Fritz, a champion at the 2022 Indian Wells Open. is two wins away from lifting the trophy at the 2025 Miami Open. Fritz was made to earn his semi-final debut at home in a slugfest against Italy’s Matteo Berrettini before prevailing in a high-quality display of tennis, 7-5, 6-7(7), 7-5.

The American has moved to 14-5 this season after posting wins over Lorenzo Sonego, Denis Shapovalov, and Adam Walton earlier. Looking to prevent Fritz from reaching the title round will be Jakub Mensik. A fourth-round walkover by Tomas Machac has made Mensik’s journey to the last four easier.

His semi-final opponent, Taylor Fritz, will have the backing of the home crowd. How well Fritz can recover from his monumental efforts in the quarter-final against Matteo Berrettini will be a key factor when he takes on Mensik in the last four.

Fritz will be back on court just a day after he pulled off a three-set win against a stubborn Matteo Berrettini. Mensik will be fresher of the two and is a different player from the 17-year-old whom Fritz defeated at the 2023 US Open, having reached his first tour-level final in Doha last season.

Result: Mensik will win in three sets.
