Frances Tiafoe will be playing at a grand slam semi-final for the second time.

The US Open 2024 will see a historic semi-final clash between Americans Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe. It will be the first all American men’s semi-final in a grand slam since 2005. While Fritz is making his debut at a grand slam semi-final, it will be the second instance for Tiafoe. Nevertheless, the fans will be excited to finally see an American in the final of Flushing Meadows.

Fritz defeated Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinals in four sets to set a career milestone. He had previously lost four grand slam quarterfinals before beating Zverev at the Arthur Ashe stadium. It was Fritz’s second consecutive and fifth win overall against the German in 10 meetings.

While Fritz needed four sets, his compatriot Tiafoe did not need much time in his quarterfinal match. Tifafoe’s opponent, Grigor Dimitrov retired after the fifth game of the fourth set. The 20th seed had made his grand slam semi-final debut at New York in 2022 while losing a four hour-match to Carlos Alcaraz.

Tiafoe and Fritz are chasing history at US Open 2024 as one of them will become the first American man to reach a grand slam final in 15 years. Andy Roddick had reached the Wimbledon final in 2009 while losing to Roger Federer.

Who were the American men to clash in a grand slam semi-final before Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe?

The previous instance of an all American men’s semi-final clash at a grand slam was during US Open 2005. Andre Agassi defeated Robby Ginepri in five sets to reach the finals where he lost to Federer. The 7th seed had defeated another American, James Blake to set up a clash against Ginepri who had overcome Guillermo Coria in the quarterfinals.

This time, home crowd favourites Tiafoe and Fritz will be recreating the epic clash after 19 years at the same event. Both the 26-year-olds will be hoping to make further history when they clash at Arthur Ashe stadium on September 7.

With only a few more days left for the grand finale, the fans have seen American players rise on the men’s and women’s singles main draw at US Open 2024.
