The 20-year-old, Coco Gauff, is the defending US Open champion.

American tennis star Coco Gauff has set a new record at the US Open. At just 20 years old, she’s now the youngest player to win 15 women’s singles matches at Flushing Meadows since Caroline Wozniacki did it in 2010.

Gauff reached this milestone, when she beat Varvara Gracheva 6-2, 6-0 in the first round of US Open 2024. This win marks the start of her attempt to defend the title she won last year.

In 2023, Gauff won her first major tournament at the US Open. She was 19 when she beat Aryna Sabalenka in the final, making her one of the youngest US Open champions ever.

Her rise in tennis has been quick. She first made headlines at 15 when she became the youngest player ever to qualify for Wimbledon main draw in Open Era. Since then, she’s won several tournaments and climbed up the world rankings.

This year has been a mix of ups and downs for Gauff. She started strong, winning tournaments in Auckland and Qatar. She also did well at the Australian Open, reaching the fourth round.

However, she struggled in some big events. She lost early at the French Open and Wimbledon. At the Paris Olympics 2024, she was named the USA flag bearer for the opening ceremony, but didn’t win a medal.

The summer has been tough for Gauff. She lost early in tournaments like Toronto, where she went down against Russia’s Diana Shnaider in third round.

At the Cincinnati Open, where she was the defending champion, Gauff lost in the second round to Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva, committing multiple double faults.

Despite these setbacks, Gauff seems ready for the US Open. Her first-round win was quick and convincing, showing she’s serious about keeping her title.

Gauff is trying to do something that hasn’t been done in a decade. The last woman to win the US Open two years in a row was Serena Williams from 2012 to 2014.
