The games are coming thick and fast at the flushing meadows as we now enter Day 8 of the US Open 2024. After two days of shocking results, normalcy was restored somewhat on Day 6 as the top seeds including Iga Swiatek and Jannik Sinner along with 2021 US Open winner Daniil Medvedev, all registered comfortable victories to remain in the hunt for glory.
At the end of Day 8, the quarterfinalists will be finalized, setting the stage for the tournament’s decisive moments. So, without further ado, let’s explore the top five matchups of the day at US Open 2024.
US Open 2024 Day 8 (September 2) Predictions
5. Jannik Sinner vs Tommy Paul
The 2024 Australian Open winner will face his first big challenge at the 2024 US Open in the form of 14th seed Tommy Paul. Amidst the numerous upsets and shocking results, the number one seed has had a near flawless campaign so far and will hope to repeat his magic against the American in what should be a hostile environment for the Italian.

Paul has shown impressive form across all surfaces this year, reaching the quarterfinals at Wimbledon and the Olympics and continued his good form in New York. He has been pretty decisive so far but clearly will have to pull off a remarkable heist to take down the top seed. While recent results indicate to expect the unexpected, it’s highly likely that the Italian will proceed to the quarters unscathed.
Prediction: Jannik Sinner to win in four sets.
4. Alex de Minaur vs Jordan Thompson
Alex de Minaur continued his good form by reaching the round of 16 at the US Open and will hope to go one step further like he did at the 2024 Wimbledon Championship. The 10th seed beat Dan Evans in four sets, and has had a smooth ride so far.
But up against him will be Jordan Thompson who had taken down seventh seed Hubert Hurkacz in only the second round. The two have faced each other five times with the Australian leading the head-to-head 4-1. However, it is worth noticing that the duo have not faced off since 2022.
Prediction: Alex de Minaur to win in five sets.

3. Karolina Muchová vs Jasmine Paolini
Jasmine Paolini made history on Saturday by becoming the first ever Italian to make it to the round of 16 of all four grand slams in the same calendar year, after defeating Yulia Putintseva. The young Italian unleashed the attack on the Kazakh with her proactiveness and strong returns leaving the 30th seed hapless.
Karolina Muchová continued to make giant strides after making headlines post her dominant victory over the four-time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka. The Czech has had a fairly easy draw so far and the Italian will present a massive hurdle, as this contest promises to be a spicy one.
Muchová has defeated Paolini in each of their last three encounters with their latest one coming back in 2021 in Melbourne.
Prediction: Jasmine Paolini to win in three sets.
2. Daniil Medvedev vs Nuno Borges
The 2021 US open champion continues to march on as he aims to repeat his heroics in what is his best chance to win the Grand Slam. Daniil Medvedev is the only player alive in the championship to have won a US Open title before and the tides are heavily titled in his favor. A straight sets victory over Flavio Cobolli underlined the Russian’s purple patch proving him to be a serious contender.
Nuno Borges will try to stop the Russian as he enters this contest on the back of a nerve-wrecking five setter, coming down from 1-2 to clinch the match. The duo have battled each other twice this year with the fifth seed winning on both counts. A lot of similarity can be drawn from their last encounter at the Australian Open in the round of 16 where Medvedev won in four sets.
Prediction: Daniil Medvedev to win in four sets.
1. Iga Swiatek vs Liudmila Samsonova
Unlike their male counterparts, the women’s singles has majorly witnessed all the top seeds stay in the hunt so far. The current world #1 Iga Swiatek continues to have an untroubled journey in New York breezing past 25th seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in straight sets in her third round to take on 16th seed Liudmila Samsonova for a birth in the final 8.

The Russian had made it to the quarterfinals of both the Cincinnati and Canadian Open before being handed over tough losses. The two have faced off three times in the past and the Polish has a 100% success record against Samsonova. Their last battle took place at the China Open in which Swiatek demolished the Russian in straight sets.
Prediction: Iga Swiatek to win in straight sets.
