Jack Draper became the first male British tennis star to reach the semifinals at Flushing Meadows since Andy Murray in 2012.

British tennis star Jack Draper lost to Italy’s Jannik Sinner in the semifinals of US Open 2024 on Friday, September 6. After not dropping a single set through his campaign at Flushing Meadows, he went down fighting against the ATP World No. #1 in the semifinals.

It was the Brit’s first-ever semi-final appearance at a Grand Slam. Moreover, he defeated the likes of Tomas Machac, Alex de Minaur, Zhang Zhizhen, and more to reach the last four. Nevertheless, playing against his doubles partner from the Canadian Open, Draper failed to put up his best display.

In a gruelling clash, Jack Draper didn’t look well at the Arthur Ashe Stadium, as he vomited multiple times during the match. Problems for the Briton increased in the second set as he had to take a medical timeout, in which he consumed salts and liquids.

During the post-match interview, Draper talked about vomiting and taking medical timeout during the semifinal fixture. The 22-year-old stated that he didn’t feel any problems before the match. However, the match was physically challenging for him, and due to the humid conditions, he threw up on the court.

Draper said, “Yeah, I mean, obviously it was extremely humid today. Hasn’t been pretty much the whole week as of yet. You know, I think it was a very physical match. Obviously that’s why Jannik is the No. 1 player in the world, because when you play the top players, the intensity is different.”

He also lauded Jannik Sinner for his on-court prowess. Draper dubbed himself as ‘an anxious human being’ and stated that the big-match anxiety made him fumble and his health condition problematic. He added, “I think obviously it’s a big occasion for me. I definitely felt, even though I generally feel pretty relaxed and stuff, I definitely felt more excited today, a few more nerves around.”

Draper concluded, “I’m definitely someone who is, I think, quite an anxious human being. I think when you add all that together sometimes, I do feel a bit nausea on court, and I do feel a little bit sick when it gets tough. Yeah, I didn’t have any problems before the match, but it obviously just built up.”

However, the Briton later completed the match as he lost 7-5, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 to Sinner. Despite the loss, Jack Draper has become the first male British tennis star to reach the semifinals at Flushing Meadows since Andy Murray in 2012.

Meanwhile, Jannik Sinner also showed little sign of discomfort during the match. The Australian Open champion injured his left wrist during the ninth game of the second set when the score was tied 4-4.
