As the competition enters day 6, more drama and intense action is expected as athletes from across the globe hope to secure a berth in the round of 16.
Both the top seeds: Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek along with the 2021 US Open champion Daniil Medvedev are set to make appearances, setting things up for a mouthwatering day of high-quality tennis.
Thus, without any further delay, let’s take a look at the top five matches on Day 6 of the 2024 US Open:
US Open 2024 Day 6 (August 31) Predictions
5. Jannik Sinner vs Christopher O’Connell
Jannik Sinner entered the US Open amidst a hurricane of controversies around him and began with a bit of an hiccup in the first round losing his first set. But since then, the Italian has shown everyone why he is seeded first, beating Alex Michelsen in the second round in straight sets.

The number one seed will be facing Australia’s Christopher O’Connell in the third round. Connell made headlines early into the tournament, eliminating 29th seed Nicholas Jarry in his first round and then Mattia Bellucci in four sets.
The Australian’s journey to the third round has been nothing short of sensational, especially considering how close he came to being relegated in the qualifiers. Despite his good stint so far, the reigning Australian Open winner is expected to dominate this clash.
Prediction: Jannik Sinner to win in straight sets.
4. Jasmine Paolini vs Yulia Putintseva
An interesting women’s singles match is up for grabs between two quality players. Jasmine Paolini has had a dream year finishing as the finalists at both the Roland Garros and the Wimbledon. The Italian will be itching to finish off the year with a maiden Grand Slam title to her name.
On the other hand, Yulia Putintseva has earned the title of “big-eater” having defeated world number one Iga Swiatek at the 2024 Wimbledon championship and US Open winner Coco Gauff at the Cincinnati Masters. This will be just second occasion when these two face off with their only battle taking place back in 2021 which was then won by Paolini.
Prediction: Yulia Putintseva to win in three sets.
3. Alex de Minaur vs Daniel Evans
Daniel Evans recently came under the spotlight for prevailing over Karen Khachanov in a marathon contest that lasted more than 5 hours, becoming the longest match ever in the history of the US Open. Up against him will be the 10th seed Alex de Minaur, who is playing his first tournament since the heartbreaking withdrawal at the Wimbledon championship wherein he was set to face Novak Djokovic in the quarters.
However, as fate would have it, the Australian has the opportunity to compete against the Serbian if he manages to win his third round. Unlike his British rival, Minaur has had a smooth ride and is expected to come on top at the end of this contest.
Prediction: Alex de Minaur to win in four sets.
2. Daniil Medvedev vs Flavio Cobolli
Daniil Medvedev completed a comfortable straight set victory over Hungary’s Fabian Marozsan to set up a date with another Hungarian in the form of Flavio Cobolli. Post Alcaraz’s early exit, Medvedev would be hoping to repeat his 2021 heroics when he won his first and only Grand Slam.
The fifth seed has never faced the Hungarian before in his career. Cobolli had pulled off a couple of major upsets earlier this month, defeating 10th seed Tommy Paul at the Cincinnati Masters and 14th seed Felix Auger Aliassime at the Canadian Open. While the Russian will be vary of his rival, he is expected to emerge victorious over the 31st seed.
Prediction: Daniil Medvedev to win in four sets.
1. Iga Swiatek vs Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova
The current world number one Iga Swiatek has been enjoying a merry ride so far at the 2024 US Open, crushing her rivals in an emphatic manner. Against Ena Shibahara in the second round, Swiatek dropped only three sets throughout the match.

After facing a couple of qualifiers in her first two rounds, Swiatek’s real test will be against the 25th seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova who had beaten the 2024 Olympic gold medalist Qinwen Zheng, the same player who had earlier beaten Swiatek in the semifinals. The Polish number one has shown remarkable grit and resilience so far and she will have to put on a dominant show if she were to make it to the round of 16.
Prediction: Iga Swiatek to win in three sets.
