Hello and welcome to Khel Now’s live blog for the Jannik Sinner vs Jack Draper semi-final match at US Open 2024. Please wait for the blog to load.

World No. #1 Jannik Sinner and Britain’s top-ranked player Jack Draper powered through to their first semi-final at the US Open 2024. They will play their match on September 7th (Saturday) at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Sinner survived an attempt by 2021 champion Daniil Medvedev, to get back into the game in their last eight meeting. Medvedev clawed his way back to take the second set 6-1 after losing the first 2-6. However, 57 unforced errors and six double faults in an error-strewn match proved too much to overcome for the Russian. With that, Medvedev lost a chance to make the US Open final for a third time.

Sinner reversed the setback he suffered at Medvedev’s hands in the Wimbledon quarterfinals this year. The Italian prevailed 6-2, 1-6, 6-1, 6-4, in two hours, and 39 minutes to book a meeting with Jack Draper. It is the 23-year-old Italian’s fourth Grand Slam semi-final in the season.

Draper, for his part, subdued 10th seed Alex de Minaur, 6-3, 7-5, 6-2, on Wednesday evening in New York to reach his maiden Grand Slam semi-final. The 22-year-left hander is only the fourth man from his country to reach a men’s singles semi-final in New York in the Open Era. after Greg Rusedski (1997), Tim Henman (2004) and Andy Murray (2008, 2011-12) are the other three.

The Australian, competing in his first singles event since Wimbledon due to a hip injury, could not halt Draper’s progress in Flushing Meadows. The top-ranked Briton is No. #20 in the live rankings and could climb to No. #14 if he manages to make the title round.

Jannik Sinner vs Jack Draper preview

Jack Draper is yet to drop a set in the ongoing US Open 2024. His semi-final rival, Jannik Sinner, dropped a set in his first-round match with Mackenzie McDonald, and now in the quarterfinals against Daniil Medvedev. With nine of the top 10 seeds eliminated from the tournament, top-seed Sinner is the sole survivour on the list.

Sinner will be wary of that when he crosses paths with Draper. The Italian trails in their head-to-head, losing their only tour-level meeting at Queen’s in 2021. Sinner was the World No. #23 on that occasion, while Draper was an unseeded wildcard.

Draper and Sinner made their way to the last four from the same half of the draw populated by five of the top 10 seeds, Sinner included. The exit of Carlos Alcaraz and Hubert Hurkacz in the first week gave the two first-time semi-finalists an easier path to the last four. It will be either Frances Tiafoe or Taylor Fritz waiting in the wings for the winner of the Draper-Sinner match.

Head-to-head records

  • Matches – 1
  • Jack Draper – 1
  • Jannik Sinner – 0

The Draper-Sinner rivalry which began in 2021 sees the Briton in the lead. He defeated Sinner as a wildcard entry in the opening at Queen’s Club for a 7-6(6), 7-6(2) win.

Prediction

When Jack Draper overpowered Sinner in the opening round of the Queen’s Club tournament in 2021, the Briton was a lowly No. #309, while Sinner was ranked #23rd. The Italian had already won an ATP 250 event in Melbourne and reached the Miami Masters final in March of that year. In contrast, Draper had played only two ATP-level events that season, with the best result being the quarterfinal appearance in London.

Fast-forward to 2024, and the Briton has established himself as one of the players to watch out for. He picked up his maiden trophy in Stuttgart by defeating Frances Tiafoe in the quarterfinals. Draper went on to stop Carlos Alcaraz in his tracks as the Spaniard looked to add a second straight Queen’s Club trophy.

Sinner has won five titles this season including the Australian Open, his first Grand Slam. His title collection this season includes the ATP Masters events at Cincinnati and Miami giving the Italian a 28-2 win-loss record on hard courts this season.

While Draper has a more modest 12-8 hard-court record in 2024, five high-profile wins against top 20 players, leaves him better placed to challenge Sinner for a spot in the title round. Sinner is all that is standing preventing a tournament without a top seed, and that pressure could weigh him down.

The ongoing US Open 2024 has already seen plenty of upsets in the men’s and women’s draws and another one could be brewing along with the Honey Deuce.

Result: Jack Draper to win in four sets.
