Hello and welcome to Khel Now’s live blog for Jannik Sinner vs Taylor Fritz match in US Open 2024 finals. Please wait for the blog to load.
The curtains come down on the US Open 2024 after two weeks of intense on-court action, and it has been quite a ride. Early defeats of the favourites and defending champions have kept things unpredictable – making the 2024 edition an open race for the title.
Nine of the top 10 seeds in the men’s draw had their campaigns cut short by the quarter-final stage. Only four of those nine made it to the second week – Alexander Zverev, Grigor Dimitrov, Alex de Minaur, and Daniil Medvedev. Fifth-seeded Medvedev was the last to exit New York after his quarter-final loss to Jannik Sinner.
The two remaining men – Jannik Sinner and Taylor Fritz – are both first-time finalists. Sinner is the first Italian to make the final at Flushing Meadows. By securing his place in the title match, Fritz becomes the first American to reach the final since Andy Roddick in 2006, who won the trophy in 2003.
Sinner overcame three Americans, including 14th seed Tommy Paul in the fourth round, to reach the final. In the semifinals, he defeated first-time major semi-finalist Jack Draper in straight sets. The Briton challenged the World No. #1 in the first two sets but faded in the third, resulting in a 7-5, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 defeat after three hours of play, sending Sinner into his first US Open final.
Taylor Fritz beat compatriot and close friend Frances Tiafoe, who was playing in his second US Open semi-final, following his appearance in the 2022 edition. Fritz triumphed over Tiafoe 4-6, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 in a three-hour, 18-minute battle. Tiafoe held the momentum until he lost his serve in the 10th game of the fourth set, allowing Fritz to take control and ultimately secure a title showdown with Italy’s Jannik Sinner.

Jannik Sinner vs Taylor Fritz – Preview
Jack Draper appeared to be giving Sinner a run for his money in two closely contested opening sets, with the second going into a tiebreak. However, the 22-year-old Briton lost his way from the closing stages of the second set, vomiting three times on court. Sinner also survived a scare in the second set when he stumbled and hurt his wrist while cushioning his fall.
Taylor Fritz traded sets with Frances Tiafoe, with Tiafoe claiming the first and third sets with identical 6-4 scorelines. After winning the second set 7-5, Fritz took the fourth by breaking Tiafoe’s serve in the crucial tenth game. Emotions got the better of Tiafoe as he bounced his racquet on the court while trailing 4-0. Although he broke serve to claim the next game after that show of frustration, it was his only game in the decider.
The 12th-seeded Fritz seized the momentum in the final set with three breaks of serve to go up 5-1. Tiafoe gifted Fritz match point when a crosscourt backhand volley sailed long. Fritz capitalized on the opportunity, closing out the match with an ace, leaving him one win away from his maiden Grand Slam trophy.
Head-to-head records
Matches – 2
Jannik Sinner – 1
Taylor Fritz – 1
The head-to-head between Taylor Fritz and Jannik Sinner is poised at 1-1. It has been three years since they first met. They have played both their matches — the ATP Masters 1000 Indian Wells in 2021 and 2023. While Fritz claimed the first win, Sinner emerged victorious on the second occasion.
Prediction
Sinner has a clean slate of 5-0 in the 2024 season’s tour-level finals to preserve, and will be happy to extend that unbeaten record when he meets Taylor Fritz on Sunday in New York. Sinner made his first Grand Slam title round appearance in his 17th major in Melbourne this season. The Italian left the shores of Australia with the trophy in his bag.
Taylor Fritz, in contrast, took 33 major appearances to reach his first final. Fritz is one win away from ensuring a homegrown male Grand Slam singles champion for the first time in 21 years. Andy Roddick was the last American to win the US Open in 2003 for his first and only major title.
Fritz breezed through the first three rounds in straight sets, taking four sets to win his fourth round and quarter-final matches. The semi-final was, of course, a five-set affair against Frances Tiafoe. Sinner was taken to four sets in the opening round and the quarterfinals. The rest were completed in straight sets, including his semi-final against Jack Draper.
Fritz is 10-8 in New York to Sinner’s 10-5, not including the ongoing edition. The hard-courts records of 2024 show Sinner better placed than Fritz in the numbers game. The Italian’s 28 match wins came for the loss of two, while Fritz trails with thirteen wins and seven losses.
Sinner is close to taking over the lead as ATP Tour leader for most wins from Alexander Zverev after reaching the title round. The Italian has 54 wins to 56 by Zverev. The German made a last-eight exit in New York against Taylor Fritz.
Sinner leads the rest of the field by comfortable margins in the live rankings and the Race to Turin. The Italian is well-placed to finish the season as ATP World No. #1 for the first time. Bagging the title at Flushing Meadows might just settle the chase in his favour.
Fritz is poised to make a leap in ATP Rankings as well. Reaching the finals will place him within breathing distance of his career-high best of World No. #5. Already, the top-ranked American, Fritz will re-enter the top ten on Monday as the No. #7.
Result: Jannik Sinner to win in five sets.
