Rafael Nadal last played at the US Open in 2022, where he reached the fourth round.

Spanish tennis star Rafael Nadal has announced his withdrawal from the 2024 US Open. The 38-year-old recently took to social media and made the announcement.

The 2008 Beijing Olympics gold medal will end his campaign this year without a single match won at the Grand Slams, which is the first time since 2002. In June, it was stated that Nadal had been named on the entry list for the US Open and that he would play at Flushing Meadows.

However, Nadal’s recent social media post has ended all the speculation. The Spaniard stated that he’s missing the 2024 US Open because he won’t be able to give his 100% at the tournament. Nevertheless, the 38-year-old will play at the 2024 Laver Cup, scheduled from September 20 to 22.

He wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “Hi all, writing today to let you guys know that I have decided not to compete at this year’s US Open a place where I have amazing memories.

He further added, “I will miss those electric and special night sessions in NYC at Ashe, but I don’t think I would be able to give my 100% this time. Thanks to all my US Fans, in particular, will miss you all and will see you another time. Best of lucks to all for the always amazing US Open! My next event will be the Laver Cup in Berlin.”

Nadal suffered a hip injury during the 2023 Australian Open. He had to undergo a surgical procedure for the issue, and due to that, Nadal took a year off from tennis. In January 2024, he returned to Brisbane International, where his hip injury flared.

After a prolonged hiatus of three more months, the Spaniard returned to the sport at the Barcelona Open in April. He later played in the French Open, where he lost to eventual runner-up Alexander Zverev in the first round. Nadal also played in the 2024 Paris Olympics, where he lost to Novak Djokovic in the second round of the men’s singles event.

Nadal has won four US Open titles. In 2010, he completed his Career Slam by defeating Novak Djokovic in the final at Arthur Ashe Stadium. He later won the title in 2013, 2017 and 2019 too. Nadal last played in New York City during the 2022 US Open, where he bowed out of the tournament after losing against Home Hope Frances Tiafoe in the fourth round.
