Last season’s runners-up, Bopanna-Ebden are seeded second at US Open 2024.

Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden will be playing their final Grand Slam of the 2024 calendar year, which in many ways has been a roller-coaster ride. The year began with the duo’s biggest accomplishment as a pairing as the Indian-Australian partnership finally reaped rewards for their consistent outings by winning the Australian Open.

Bopanna became the oldest man to win a Grand Slam and many felt this was just the beginning. A few months later, they won their first-ever Miami Open title. The duo then fought their way and made it to the semifinals before bowing out to the Italian pair. Since then, though, the ride has gone southwards.

There were disappointments at the Italian Open, Madrid Open and the Queen’s Club Championship. In a rare failure, the 2024 Australian Open winners lost to an unseeded German pair in the second round of the 2024 Wimbledon championship. This followed the Olympic Games where Bopanna seemed to be well short of his best losing to the home favorites in just the first round.

Contrary to the Indian veteran, the man from Australia scripted history by winning the Olympic Gold alongside John Peers at the Games. Post the Paris Olympics, the duo competed in Canada and Cincinnati but faced first round exits in both tournaments.

Rohan Bopanna/Matthew Ebden vs Robin Haase/Sander Arends preview

The two teams will take on each other for the second time this year. Their first and only meeting took place only a couple of months back at Wimbledon where Bopanna and Ebden won comfortably. The Indo-Ausssie duo enter US Open 2024 as the second seeds and will be looking to expand their cabinet.

The second seeds are one of the most experienced pairs on tour and will need to shrug off their poor form heading into the all-important tournament. A lot will rely on the Indian veteran’s ability to get back to his best and nail his backhand winners. Ebden on the other hand is playing the tennis of his life, fresh from the memorable Olympic extravaganza.

Against them are the Italian pairing of Hasse and Arends who recently won the Braunschweig Open but other than that do not have much to show. They last appeared at the Winston-Salem Open wherein they suffered a round one exit. Given the pedigree and experience the Italians will have to tackle on the other end of the spectrum, the path is certainly not going to be easy for them in the first round.

Prediction

Entering this clash as the second seeds, Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden undoubtedly enter the first-round match as the favourites. However, one can never take any opponent for granted, particularly in men’s doubles where momentum has a massive say.

As things stand, the second seeds are reeling from a string of disappointing performances, with back-to-back early exits at both the Canadian Masters and the Cincinnati Open. Despite their opponents’ lackluster recent form, the seasoned duo will be desperate to regain their footing and build momentum.

With their eyes set on securing a second Grand Slam title in this calendar year, they’ll be hoping to rediscover their confidence and reassert their dominance on the big stage.

Prediction: Rohan Bopanna/Matthew Ebden to win in straight sets.
