US Open 2024 Day 7 predictions: Top five matches on September 1 featuring Coco Gauff, Aryna Sabalenka & more
There are several big matchups in the US Open 2024 round of 16.
The US Open 2024 has produced a couple of shocking results over the last two days. In less than 24 hours after the reigning Roland Garros and Wimbledon winner, Carlos Alcaraz was knocked out, the 24-time Grand Slam Champion Novak Djokovic too suffered a loss in the third round—marking the Serbian’s earliest exit from the US Open since 2008.
With an incredible couple of days of delightful tennis, Day 7 promises to be the same featuring the likes of the defending champion Coco Gauff, 2023 US open finalist Aryna Sabalenka and many more.
Thus, without any further delay, let’s take a look at the top five matches on Day 7 of US Open 2024:
US Open 2024 Day 7 (September 1) Predictions
5. Coco Gauff vs Emma Navarro
An all American clash in the fourth round as the defending champion takes on fellow counterpart Emma Navarro. Coco Gauff had a challenging yet excellent third round against Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina. After losing the first set, the American did incredibly well to turn things around. Emma Navarro on the other hand defeated 19th seed Marta Kostyuk, in a three-setter contest.

This clash will present Gauff with an opportunity to avenge her Wimbledon loss against Navarro, who had knocked her out of the grass court championship beating her comfortably, in straight sets.
Prediction: Coco Gauff to win in straight sets
4. Frances Tiafoe vs Alexei Popyrin
The tennis fraternity was still processing Carlos Alcaraz’s early exit when Alexei Popyrin produced the biggest upset of the year by taking down the 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic in four sets. Popyrin, who had won the Canadian Masters a few weeks back, produced the tennis of his life to stage a remarkable triumph over the defending champion.
He now faces Frances Tiafoe, who is in a purple patch having earlier beaten Alcaraz at the Cincinnati Open and now defeated Ben Shelton in the third round. The duo have never played against each other in the past, making it an incredibly excited clash to look forward to.
Prediction: Alexei Popyrin to win in four sets.
3. Qinwen Zheng vs Donna Vekic
The 2024 Olympic gold medalist and silver medalist face off in the fourth round in what should be a block-buster contest. Donna Vekic had a fabulous Wimbledon making her first semi-final appearance in the tourney while Qinwen Zheng is still fresh from creating history in Paris by winning China their first gold medal in tennis in Olympic history.
However, the gold medalist has an average record on hard courts. She was knocked out of the Cincinnati Open in the round of 16. Vekic on the other hand suffered a round of 64 loss but has done well in big matches so far. The Croatian is yet to drop a set at US Open 2024, however, she will face her biggest test against the Chinese in what should be an evenly matched contest.
Prediction: Donna Vekic to win in three sets.
2. Alexander Zverev vs Brandon Nakashima
Recent results including the shocking elimination of Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic have enhanced Alexander Zverev’s chances of winning his first ever Grand Slam trophy. In his third round against Tomas Martin Etcheverry, after losing the first set, the German fought back to win the match.

Against him will be home-lad Brandon Nakashima, who defeated Olympic bronze medalist and Wimbledon semifinalist, Lorenzo Musetti. One thing for certain is that Nakashima will have the crowd rooting for him in what will be an incredibly energetic and lively atmosphere.
Zverev holds a 2-0 edge over Nakashima in career head-to-head meetings with their last meeting taking place in 2022 at the French Open which the German won in straight sets.
Prediction: Alexander Zverev to win in four sets.
1. Aryna Sabalenka vs Elise Mertens
Aryna Sabalenka managed to avoid an upset at US Open 2024 against Ekaterina Alexandrova in her third round. After losing the first set, the Belarusian managed to find her mojo and eventually launched a brutal attack to clinch the following two sets to seal her spot in the round of 16.

Elise Mertens, who stunned 14th seed Maddison Keys to book a spot in the round of 16, will be her opponent in the fourth round. Sabalenka has a terrific head-to-head record against the Belgian leading 7-2. In fact, the 2023 US Open finalist has defeated Mertens in each of their last five encounters and will be expected to emerge victorious yet again.
Prediction: Aryna Sabalenka to win in three sets.
