US Open 2024 Day 9 (September 3) Predictions
5. Aryna Sabalenka vs Qinwen Zheng
A fiesty, spicy battle awaits us all in the women’s singles quarterfinals as the rematch of the 2024 Australian Open final beckons against Aryna Sabalenka and Qinwen Zheng. The Belarusian recently scripted history by becoming the first women since Serena Williams in 2016 to make it to the tournament’s quarters for the fourth consecutive time.

However, in order to get to the semifinals, she will have to triumph over the high-flying Zheng, who’s confidence must be on an all-time high after beating Donna Vekic in the round of 16 in a thrilling three setter.
When these two last met at the Australian Open, Sabalenka crushed the Chinese in straight sets. However, considering Zheng’s impressive form over the past few months, there’s every reason to believe the seventh seed could outshine the second seed this time around.
Prediction: Qinwen Zheng to win in three sets.
4. Grigor Dimitrov vs Frances Tiafoe
Grigor Dimitrov prevailed in a marathon contest against a dear friend, Andrey Rublev, in his fourth-round match. After winning the first two sets, he was put under the pump by the Russian who managed to level terms. However, the Bulgarian managed to keep his nerve in the end to make it to the quarters.
Frances Tiafoe put on a dominant display, staging a remarkable recovery to beat the Novak Djokovic slayer- Alexei Popyrin. The American did so comfortably in four sets and will now hope to make back-to-back semifinals entries, first at the Cincinnati Open and now in New York.
The duo has clashed four times in the past with Dimitrov winning their latest battle in 2023 Wimbledon, in straight sets.
Prediction: Grigor Dimitrov to win in five sets.
3. Emma Navarro vs Paula Badosa
Emma Navarro shocked her own hometown crowd by taking down the defending champion, Coco Gauff in the round of 16, repeating her heroics from the Wimbledon championship, a few months back. However the American will hope to convert the win into a championship title, as she aims to go all the way.
The 13th seed meets the 26th seed Paula Badosa, who will be playing her maiden US Open quarter-final. Surprisingly, the Spaniard hasn’t encountered any big name yet and heads into this match after decimating Wang Yafan in the fourth round. Badosa won the only encounter between the two, staging a miraculous heist from a set down at the 2024 Italian Open.
Prediction: Emma Navarro to win in three sets.
2. Rohan Bopanna/Aldila Sutjiadi vs Donald Young/Taylor Townsend
The Indo-Indonesian duo of Bopanna and Sutjiadi will aim to make history by securing a final berth at the US Open 2024. Seeded eighth, Bopanna-Sutjiadi will be extremely high on confidence after taking out two high quality opponents in their previous two contests and have already exceed expectations.
The all-American duo of Taylor Townsend and Donald Young will have the backing of the crowd and do have experience in the mix. Townsend won the women’s doubles event at the 2024 Wimbledon championships while her partner Young will play his second semi-final at the US Open after long a span of 10 years.
Although Bopanna and Sutjiadi are higher ranked as compared to their American rivals, they’ll face a hostile challenge against the home favorites.
Prediction: Donald Young/Taylor Townsend to win in straight sets.
1. Alexander Zverev vs Taylor Fritz
This men’s singles quarter-final clash will have no shortage of drama and action, as two hot headed tennis players will take centre stage yet again. Post the dramatic turnaround in Wimbledon coupled by the controversies post the match, there is a lot at stake for both these men.
Taylor Fritz emerged victorious in the fourth round of the 2024 Wimbledon championships against Alexander Zverev, coming from two sets down to seal a spot in the quarters. It was an electrifying battle, gripped with emotions as the match wasn’t just limited to the players, with the families getting involved.

Zverev made his disappointment known towards Fritz regarding his box (and particularly his girlfriend) shouting loudly in between points. Post the triumph, Fritz’s soulmate hit back, sharing a controversial Instagram post which many allegedly believed to be an attempt to take a dig on Zverev’s past.
While the intensity and desperation will be palpable on the court, it will be the player who manages their nerves most effectively who will be able to secure a place in the semifinals.
Prediction: Alexander Zverev to win in five sets.
