The 2025 Australian Open will be played four months after the 2024 US Open.

The 2024 US Open is scheduled from August 26 to September 8. The tennis world is expected to witness the rivalry between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner as Novak Djokovic attempts to safeguard his title. However, a few tennis stars will play their final Grand Slam campaign at the 2024 US Open.

Hence, with that being said, let’s take a look at the top 5 stars playing their last Grand Slam at the US Open:

5. Diego Schwartzman

Diego Schwartzman will play his last tournament in his home country, Argentina, in February 2025. However, the 2024 US Open is expected to be his last Grand Slam. He will have an opportunity to play at the 2025 Australian Open, but Schwartzman would be required to stay in form and perform continuously.

The former world No. 8 has won four titles in his professional career and aged 32, he will say the final goodbye to the sport. Currently ranked 230, Diego Schwartzman has lost all seven matches she has played this year.

4. Richard Gasquet

Former World No. 7, Richard Gasquet is a two-time junior Grand Slam champion. Being in the ‘Big Three’ era, plenty of players failed to reach their full potential, and one of them is Gasquet. A three-time singles Grand Slam semi-finalist, the Frenchman has been on the tour since 2002.

However, since his surgery in 2019, Gasquet has failed to match the pace on the tour. The 37-year-old didn’t get a wildcard for the competition, and he would be required to play in the qualifiers for a spot in the main draw.

3. Gael Monfils

Aged 37, Gael Monfils recorded a memorable victory over four-time Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz at the 2024 Cincinnati Open. Monfils is a two-time singles Grand Slam champion and a joy to watch because of his showman skills. From jumping backhands to tweeners, the Frenchman’s arsenal was full of trick shots and massive potential, which he failed to reach.

The former World No. 6 reached the second week of a Grand Slam in 2022 in Melbourne. He reached the quarterfinals of the 2022 Australian Open, where he lost to Matteo Berrettini in five sets. Since then, his struggles on the tour have continued. Earlier this year, he hinted at retirement by stating that he misses his daughter and that she doesn’t get proper attention from her parents because her mother, Elina Svitolina, is also a tennis player. Thus, Monfils can also announce his retirement after the 2024 US Open.

2. Dominic Thiem

The announcement of Dominic Thiem’s retirement was the news everyone knew would come soon, but the tennis world wanted to avoid it. Austria’s Thiem had charm and flair in his game, was interesting to watch, and also had the talent to make it big. He reached the final of the French Open twice, in 2018 and 2019, losing against the King of Clay on both occasions.

He also played in the final of the 2020 Australian Open and later won his maiden and only Grand Slam title at the same year’s US Open, defeating Alexander Zverev in a five-set classic. However, he suffered a right wrist injury against Adrian Mannarino in the Mallorca Championships. The injury forced him to retire from the match, and after multiple procedures, Thiem never returned to his old form. Earlier this year, he announced that he would retire from the sport, and he received a wild card for the 2024 US Open.

1. Stan Wawrinka

The 2016 US Open champion, Stan Wawrinka, is currently 39 years old, and he’s playing a few matches of his professional career. One of the only two players to win three Grand Slam titles during the ‘Big 3’ era, Wawrinka’s on-court prowess is often overlooked by the tennis world. Andy Murray retired from tennis after the 2024 Paris Olympics, where he reached the third round of the men’s doubles event alongside Dan Evans.

Meanwhile, Wawrinka was eliminated in the second round of the men’s singles event at the Olympics. The Swiss tennis star is also the only player to win the French Open title in the last decade, apart from Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. However, the age has started catching up with the three-time Grand Slam champion, and the 2024 US Open could possibly be the last Grand Slam, where we will see Stan Wawrinka. The 39-year-old received a wild card for the hard-court Grand Slam.
