Several top singles stars are set to compete in the final Grand Slam of the year.

The US Open 2025 is set to kick off on Sunday, August 24, with the first round of the main draw at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. But before the action begins, there is a concern that rain might disrupt play at Flushing Meadows.

Just this past Wednesday, persistent rain wiped out almost the entire day of qualifying. Only 14 of the 64 second-round qualifying matches were able to start before organizers called off play at around 4:00 p.m. local time.

The Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens, New York, boasts 33 courts, including two major stadiums with retractable roofs. Arthur Ashe Stadium, the main arena, has a fully watertight roof completed in 2016, offering complete protection from rain.

Meanwhile, the Louis Armstrong Stadium, which got a retractable roof added in 2018, is naturally ventilated. It can shelter players from light showers, but wind-driven rain can still enter.

The remaining courts, including the Grandstand and Court 17, are open-air. Matches on these courts are particularly vulnerable to disruptions if the rain returns.

Despite heavy rain earlier in the week, the mixed doubles semi-finals and final went ahead under the safety of Arthur Ashe’s roof, unaffected by the rain.

Singles matches featuring star players such as Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic, Aryna Sabalenka, Iga Swiatek, and Coco Gauff are also likely to be scheduled under the rain-protected roofs.

US Open 2025 opening day weather

Looking ahead to Sunday, the first day of the 2025 US Open main draw, the weather looks mostly favourable. According to AccuWeather, there is only an 11% chance of rain during the day, which means fans can expect largely dry weather during the early matches in morning and afternoon sessions.

However, evening play could face challenges. AccuWeather predicts an 80% chance of rain at night, with at least one hour of showers expected. Players on outdoor courts may need to pause their matches.

Monday’s forecast is more concerning. The day is expected to be humid with variable cloudiness. Thunderstorms are possible in the morning, followed by scattered showers in the afternoon.

Overall, the chance of rain is 83% during the day, 63% in the morning, and 50% in the evening. Cloud cover will be around 70%, which could lead to poor conditions in the early stages of the tournament.
