Coco Gauff matches Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova’s US Open record with win over Elina Svitolina
Gauff mustered 17 match wins at the US Open after defeating Elina Svitolina.
American tennis sensation Coco Gauff has equalled a remarkable US Open record, joining the ranks of tennis legends Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams. At just 20 years old, Gauff has now won 17 matches in the US Open women’s singles event, tying the record for most wins at the tournament this century by a player under 21.
Gauff’s latest victory came in a thrilling comeback against Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina in the third round of US Open 2024. The young star battled back from losing the first set to win 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.
The match opened with both players gauging each other’s play. Svitolina took control by winning the final three games of the first set and successfully defending three break points. However, her momentum waned as Gauff broke her serve in the sixth game of the second set, leading to a third set. Gauff ultimately won third set and match but not without breaking sweat.
Coco Gauff has been making waves in the tennis world since her debut. She first caught the public’s attention at Wimbledon in 2019, where at just 15 years old, she became the youngest player ever to qualify for the main draw. There, she stunned the tennis world by defeating Venus Williams in the first round.

Since then, Gauff’s career has been on a steady rise. She won her first major singles title at the 2023 US Open and has also excelled in doubles, winning the French Open doubles title in 2024. Her success has propelled her to impressive rankings – she’s currently ranked No. #3 in singles and has held the top spot in doubles.
Gauff’s achievement in matching the US Open record set by Sharapova and Serena Williams is particularly noteworthy. Both of these players went on to have incredible careers after their early successes. Sharapova won five Grand Slam titles in her career, while Williams became one of the most dominant players in tennis history with 23 Grand Slam singles titles.
