Who are the top five women with most US Open singles titles

These ladies have dominated the courts at Flushing Medaows.

The US Open is the fourth grand slam of the year. It takes place for two weeks, between the end of August and early September. The other three slams are Wimbledon, French Open and Australian Open. The US Open is the oldest tennis tournaments in the world. It was first organized in 1881- as a men’s only tournament – In that tournament only the clubs that were the members of the United States National Lawn Tennis Association participated, making it a high society event.

The US Open we witness now was conducted first in 1968. The 1968 tournament welcomed professional tennis players. In the beginning, the matches took place on the grass court. It was later on in 1975 when it became a hard clay court tournament. Then in 1978, it came to its current form which is a DecoTurf event. Here are the top five women to win the most US Open singles titles:

5. Kim Clijsters (2005, 2009, 2010)

Kim Clijsters is a former Belgian professional tennis player. She won the US Open title three times in her career. Clijsters won the title in 2005, 2009 and 2010. She also won the Australian Open in 2011. She attained the No. 1 position in both singles and doubles in 2003. After winning the 2005 title, she retired to raise her family at just the age of 23.

Later in 2009, she took a wild card entry in the tournament with no big recent matches under her belt. Clijsters once again silenced the critics with her performances and went on to win two titles consecutively in 2009 and 2010.

4. Martina Navratilova (1983, 1984, 1986, 1987)

Martina was born in Prague and went on to play for America after getting US citizenship. She dominated the 80's tennis world and won all her US Open titles during that period.

She won four titles with a gap of one year. Navratilova won the her first title in 1983 and defended it in 1984. She then won again in 1986 and defended it in 1987. Other than the US Open, she also won nine Wimbledon, three Australian and two French Open titles.

3. Steffi Graf (1988, 1989, 1993, 1995, 1996)

Steffi Graf is a former German professional tennis player who reigned on the Decoturf tennis in the late 80s and 90s. After the reign of Martina at the US Open in the 80s, Steffi broke her winning run in 1988 and went on to defend the title in 1989. Steffi dominated world tennis in the 90s and won three titles in 1993, 1995 and 1996.

Graf was known for her speed, intensity and powerful forehand and by the 90s she had become a premium tennis player. Other than five US Open titles, she also has four Australian Open, six French Open and seven Wimbledon titles to her name.

2. Christine Evert (1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1980, 1982)

Chris Evert was one of the first stars in the world of women's tennis. Evert completely dominated the mid and late 70s and early 80s and clinched 18 Grand Slams, including six US Open titles. She also had seven French Open, three Wimbledon and two Australian Open titles under her belt.

Evert was praised for her consistency, precision and grace on the court. Her best stroke was the two-handed backhand. She retired from tennis in 1989 and became a television commentator afterward.

1. Serena Williams (1999, 2002, 2008, 2012, 2013, 2014)

Serena is the most popular name in the world of women's tennis since the late 90s. She is said to be one of the strongest players to have ever played the game. She has 23 Grand Slams to her name, including six US Open titles. Serena has dominated the tennis world for the longest period of time. This year's US Open will be her last Grand Slam and she will be missed in the tennis world.

She has had many ups and down throughout her career and has always came back stronger. Other than six US Opens, she has won seven Wimbledon titles, as many Australian and three French Open titles as well. As Serena will be playing her last tournament this year she has the chance of winning another title.
